Hello AT,
I am madly in love with the Roche-Bobois Mah Jong seating system, but it's way, way out of my league economically.
I keep thinking: I do know how to get the *look* (using, say, the silky 9-button pillows and floor cushions from Urban Outfitters), but how do I get decent back support and "spread control"? Is there a way to build a good frame, or to chop off the legs of an existing futon frame or very spare sofa? I can't cope with the thought of people sitting down on my funky, low sofa, which then spreads apart and leaves them with their derrière par terre or back against the wall.
Merci! Diva

The store on Madison & 36th Street has massive "SALE" signs in the window...I've never seen that before...there. Might be worth looking into. They've had that cushion couch on their floor for a LONG time now...maybe you could get the floor model?
Yeah, I know. That doesn't answer you question. :)
well - use a twin mattress against the wall. and use oversized pillows.and cylindrical pillows - coordinating covers, pillow covers gives it a very aesthical look. use low seating chairs if you want a single seater.
this low seating is very common among the people in the northern part of india.
years ago I made something similiar when I was a poor student- I found an old sofa frame with almost no arms to speak of, stripped it down to the wood-cut off the legs-painted it out to the color of the cushions I had bought, then I used a combo of velcro and anti slip rug pads to keep the cushions from moving. It seems like a lot of work writing it down, but I did it all in just a few hours. It worked for years and everyone fought over my sofa when I moved and left it.
I second the motion for anti-slip rug pads. Those things are amazing.
Ok here is the there is one available on Craigs LIst right now in LA

How is the PBTeen Cushy Lounge? I stumbled upon it a few weeks ago and was intrigued. Is it comfy? Is it insanely low to the ground?
This is the stuff that I live for (well, online anyway) - velcro and non-slip rug pads. Knowing these things opens up whole worlds of options.
I love those kinds of square pillows, but I don't want to get them from Urban Outfitters (boycotting - bad politics). I like the ones on PB teen too, but they're not sold separately as pillows. I've seen some that are too flat--I'd want them thick enough to sit on for floor seating. Also, not down-filled. Anyone know where I might find these with these conditions?
I went by that Roche-Bobois sale and would not advise you to count on a big sale - stuff was mostly marked down by 10-20% tops. (I didn't go into the basement though.)
I once read somewhere that there is something called "industrial velcro" that fastens things together practically as securely as glue. This might make it more possible for you to blend together separate pieces.
That being said, in my mind what makes the Mah Jong is the fabrics used, and with the tufting and piping on alternatives like the PB Teen set linked here, reupholstering will be a nightmare. . .
pixie, abc carpet and home has a sale going on and are selling some really nice floor cushions. you might look there...
pc-thanks, but I'm in DC :(
Pixie, Crate and Barrell sells similar floor cushions. Last year it was part of their Teddy safa line, which they renamed something else. It is the softest fabric ever. Anyway, second floor of the Clarendon C&B, you'll see a small stack towards the back register area. (Saw them 2 months ago).

Hi,
regarding the industrial velcro, all the industrial velcro I have seen and used is not for fabric. That said, I have used industrial velcro on fabric, I just attach it using liquid stitch instead of that adhesive on the velcro itself.
Bye......
Many, many thanks to the AT angels and all those who responded. Lots of good ideas here, lots of possibilities to investigate. *smooch*
Furniture pallets. If you go to any cheap furniture store or Sleepy's or whatever, they have tons of pallets. You could screw them together, upholster them with a bit of batting and cheap but pretty fabric and a staple gun, and plop your urban outfitters cushions onto them. Or stain then for a rustic boho vibe. I would use the rubber mat you put under area rugs underneath, just in case (under $10 at target).
Anyway, sounds like a fun project! Post photos when you're done, yeah?
Good luck!!!
Also, a note about the UO cushions...stay away from the silky ones. I know they're pretty, but I bought one for a cool daybed thingy I inherited with my apartment, and it's pretty, but they flatten out a LOT. The silky ones are thinner than the velour-looking ones. Stick to the velour, and you should be happy with it. Also, UO was selling pretty indian platforms to put under the cushions for a little while...don't know if that's out of budget, but it was worth a mention...
