Hello AT,
I'm hoping you all can help with our marital dispute. I bought this Minka Aire Acero ceiling fan a year ago. I liked that it was clean and simple. I have no regrets about the quality, but I don't love the look...
We're doing construction in the loft area and need to buy another ceiling fan now. My husband thinks this fan is fine where it is, and we should buy another one of the same for the new space. I think we should move this fan to the new space and replace this with a fan that is lighter colored with a less obtrusive motor housing.

The fan I found is the Artemis (blogged about on AT), also by Minka, in maple. While we don't have maple elsewhere in the house, I like the warm, but light coloring, and I love the fact that the motor housing is fully clad in the maple finish, so it would not stand out.
My husband thinks that the Artemis, because of it's unusual modern styling, would stand out like a sore thumb. We're both aiming for the same goal: a simple fan that isn't especially noticeable, but we're at odds about which fan achieves this effect.
My question is which fan do you prefer better? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks! David
Artemis by a mile. If it doesn't match your current decor, build your new decor around it. Or pair it up with the Blu Dot Buttercup rocker. Hawt.

Why don't you go with the acero in the brushed steel finish? That's what I have and it looks airy. Or, you can go with the artemis in the nickel finish? See www.fanshack.com for all of the possible finishes.

Or even keep your decor with the Artemis. I get the feeling it would be unassuming and just kinda quietly blend in with its warm color and streamlined bod :)

I just got plain white ceiling fans for my place. They are perfect, you don't even notice them. Plus they were super cheap, which left money for the things that I really wanted to buy.

Of course the Artemis is more interesting looking and I would argue more "modern". BUT, those scoop parts on the fan blades look like they will be terrible dust catchers. I voted Artemis, but I would clarify only if it is low enough to be dusted regularly. Also, you said that you are looking for a fan that isn't noticible -- I think the Artemis is *more* noticible because it is unusual looking.

I like the Artemis, but we are maple people, so keep that in mind when you look at my answer.

I agree that if you want a fan that doesn't stand out, it's not the Artemis--it will definitely stand out.

The Artemis. Definitely.
And its not in your face modern either. The smooth curves and lighter wood color is very pleasingly soft and organic and would be a nice balance for any interior.
In the other hand, the hard metal details and dark materials of the Aire Acero shows more contrast and sticks out more than the Artemis.

Honestly, if you want something to blend in, get the Minka Concept II 52-in in white. We have 2 and they are practically invisible against the ceiling and can create a virtual hurricane in the room.

i voted artemis. it is not a super-modern piece. it is more of a sculptural piece that would look at home in many interiors. i feel that it will also blend in better as it is not as chunky as the acero. it also offers more design aesthetic than your average fan - something most people would note in a positive manner.

I have the artemis and after two years still like looking up at it. No fan is actually going to be invisible, so why not get one that's pretty? I live in a circa-1900 three-decker, with a rather eclectic decor.

Wow! Not a lot of Acero fans here. I have 2 of them in brushed nickel and I love them. I didn't realize that so many people want their ceiling fans camouflaged. I think they look great, fit in perfectly with my decor, and do a great job as fans.

This is David (from the question). Maxwell didn't include the picture of the Acero in place, but you can see it here. (Another angle here.) It looks nicer than in the picture above.
This is in our cabin upstate. The ceiling above the fan is paneled in stained knotty pine. (If we got the new Artemis fan for this location, this Acero would move to a room with a wallboard ceiling, which I think will look nice there, without the paneling to contrast against.
Robyn: the fan is definitely not low enough to be dusted regularly; it's a cathedral ceiling.
Martha: does the Artemis actually catch a lot of dust?
I sent in this question a few weeks ago and we already ordered the Acero fan. It's a custom color from Restoration Hardware and I wanted to order before their lighting sale ended. But it was backordered, so I can probably still cancel the order if I decide to switch to the Artemis.
Oh, has anyone actually seen the maple Artemis in person? Is the veneer nice quality/real looking?
Thanks for all the feedback!!

I have the artemis (clear version). Catches a LOT of dust... but probably because it's clear which makes it more noticeable. I don't know if the wall control is poorly produced or if I did a bad job wiring it, but the remote burned out a month into its usage. I've sat on it for the last 1.5 years, finally looked up getting a replacement wall control earlier this evening. Another $40 down the drain.

If you want unobtrusive, look at the Ball fan from Modern Fan Co. Perfect for a white ceiling.
I see your ceilings are stained wood. I think your pics of your Acero look good, but so would the Artemis.

How does the Artemis actually work as a fan though? I am considering getting the clear version for a room with a 9' ceiling so dusting will not be hard at all. I've had problems getting sufficient heating/cooling in my 20x40 living/dining room, I have two heat register/ac units on each side but hate leaving them both blasting. I figured that a fan on the living room end might make cooling more efficient and also distribute heat better?

I have the Artemis in maple. Everyone who sees it loves it and it works extremely well (9' ceiling). It only collects dust on the leading edge of the blades, and I live in a dusty old apartment.

i have the minka acero in brushed steel in my bedroom and i absolutely love it.
i'm not so into modern, so the artemis is just not my taste.

I bought some white industrial ceiling fans for our loft. We had an old, pressed tin ceiling (painted white), and the fans drew no particular attention to themselves unless you made a point of looking at them. Then you saw 3-bladed fans that were about as sleek as B2 Stealth Bombers. They were awesome. Equally awesome was the way--when we first turned them on--that they swept everything off every surface in the room. However! We learned immediately that by just turning them on one click, we achieved a lovely, cool breeze.
