Good Questions: Masculine & Modern Window Treatments?

Hi Apartment Therapy, My boyfriend just bought a new apartment — so for his birthday, I decided to give him a "while you were out" style bedroom makeover. My goal was to create a look that was both modern and masculine. The aubergine article geared me in the right direction when choosing a color to paint the walls. He was very surprised, but loved the result. Now we are unsure as to what would be the best choice for window treatments. Any suggestions?

This room looks great — our advice can be simplified down to Keep It Simple! We'd opt for a simple roller shade in a neutral, textured fabric. The Shade Store would be a great place to start. Does anyone else have suggestions?

Great choices - I agree that with those windows, architecture and views that a minimalist window treatment is required - and only for light control.

Solar Shades - rolling, or even better, fabricated as Roman's would do the trick.

Agreed-- roller shades in natural materials. Something like this is a good option on a budget:

I don't wonder that he loved it. FABULOUS.

The first thing I would do is determine whether or not there is a UV protector on the windows to prevent the fabrics and wood floors from fading. Then, I would consider shades that can be opened from both the top and bottom.

For trim, I would hang sheer white curtains, floor length, across the entire wall and trim the edges with an aubergine border.

I agree with enmnm. Sheer white curtains (I really like the VIVAN curtains from IKEA) would be great and simple.

Sheer white Curtains would be great, especially to show off the gorgeous walls! But you also should consider sunlight. I put up sheer white curtains in my bedroom, but I'm one of those people who needs as close to total darkness for sleeping. So I ended up hanging them up with a tension rod and putting thicker (and darker) curtains over them to close at night.

I have to disagree on the sheer white curtains, especially floor length. That's really going to take away from the dramatic impact of the color (which is great by the way).

I'd go for rollers given how your windows meet in a corner. I'd also go for minimal hardware. You don't want a lot of pulls/rods cluttering the look.

The most masculine window treatment is no window treatment.

I love this room.
So yummy and sexy with paint color and lighting.

If you do not need a shade for privacy the bare window looks beautiful just framing the city.

If you need to block sun or privacy natural jute/linen color roman shade is all you need.

Well done!

I stayed in a hotel that had a similar sort of feel; their windows were covered with wood blinds, and then curtains. I am usually pretty minimalist when it comes to window coverings, so I was surprised at how great this felt. And I loved the subtle shadows cast by the wood blinds. Sexy.

Here's the hotel -- (click on the Standard and Superior rooms to get a good look at the window coverings)

The draperies are pretty simple...

In your case, wood blinds the same shade as the floor, and simple drapes the colour of the design on the duvet, to tie everything together. It would look great -- very polished.

Another option would be Roman blinds made of linen, or perhaps Hunter Douglas pleated shades (I like Kashmir Everest White, but there are lots of options).

I agree about using roller blinds, although I would make them dark to match the walls. I'd also paint the window frames are darker colour, but that's just me.

I vote for Metallic Sheer Curtains- loose and flouncey-
definitely longer than shorter.

Think Pewter/Silver OR Copper- very sheer, though.

High End Budget look at Jack Lenor Larsen in The Mart.
they have some amazing fabrics....
Budget- try IKEA- I remeber seeing some there I liked in the past-
or check out the Sari Shops on Devon Avenue in Chicago, making sure you have time for the infamous Chicken Boti and Dal Fry @ Khans BBQ-Western and Devon

da BOMB!!

Keep it simple - also my first thought.

Simple, un-dramatic long white curtains - crisp white to match the white trim - or simple, white roller shades.

I'd do floor to ceiling white (maybe linen or linen look) tab back curtains. Relaly streamlined look, you could close for light control or leave open for the view. It would frame the windows beautifully. (If you use shades that merely fill the window space, I think the look will be choppy and not elegant.)

I love the room so far, and especially (what I can tell about) the art installation. Nice job! (Nice surprise!!)

Hi All,
Thanks for all the wonderful responses. We just had Hunter Douglas Designer Roller Screens installed in a light silver. We will post the result soon!

In regards to your questions:

1) The paint is Ralph Lauren's Mahogany. (be careful with this color. I tested 2 others before choosing this one and the tiniest tint variation could make the room look either purple, brown, or red, which I didn't want)

2) The duvet cover is Tamburiini from Crate and Barrel - http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=1624&f=292063)

3) The sapphire blue velvet shams are from pottery barn -http://www.potterybarn.com/products/p11229/index.cfm?pkey=cbedding%2Dsale%2Dall

Anything else, let me know! Most of this is on sale now.
