Good Questions: Metal Chandelier Scavenger?

12-1grace.jpg
Hello AT,

This is Grace from Design*Sponge. I'm having a major apt problem and wanted to see if I could ask your readers for help?

I'm moving into a new apt and want to recreate the look in this Domino magazine installation of a designer's home in California in my own (MUCH smaller) kitchen.

I'm looking for a chandelier like the one pictured- it doesn't nec. need to be white (because I can spray paint it), but I'm trying to find something vaguely similar in the under $250 price range...I was wondering if anyone knew?

I'm also looking for black knobs for my white cabinets in fun shapes, you know, fish, acorns, something of the sort (like the picture). Perhaps someone knows about that, too?

Thanks so very much! I know your readers will have some great ideas!

Grace

Dear Grace,

It's so nice to see what the Design*Sponge wants at home and to see that it's not half as modern as all the great stuff on your site. As for where to find that chandelier, this shouldn't be an expensive item, just hard to find. We had one in our house growing up and they were pretty common in the 70's, 80's.

We would look on the upper east side shops along Lexington in the 70's, the Hell's kitchen flea market, Ebay and Craigslist in places like Florida and California, Shabby Chic, Anthropologie, and vintage shops like Olde Good Things and Restoration Antiques. Anyone else....?

This site is super cheap - chandelier's for $99, you may have to take some crystals off...

There's some close ones here. Remove the excess crystals and several would work. I personally love the tulip one. And the prices are awesome.
I've never ordered from them though. Just admired the beautiful selection of colored crystals. :D

Thanks so much guys!

Also, does anyone know good flea markets in NYC? I'm always looking for unique chandies I can reno and paint...since I'm more of a web shopper I'm really unfamiliar with the great flea markets in NYC- which I know, as a New Yorker, is totally pathetic. It sadly takes way too much energy for me to cross the bridge over to the island. But now that I have a new place to decorate, I'll be leaving the borough more often...

Thanks again for all your wonderful help!

Grace :)

you could wander down the bowery:
Lighting by gregory - they also have a website. Just type the name of the store.
(sorta pricey-but there are some deals)

Check out Target online there were some smaller possibly suitable - and you won't feel guilty by splashing on white paint.

Fleamarkets : 26th Street and 6th. There's the one in the garage, and down 25th Street, but some of these guys are sharks. And you will probably need to rewire it.

ABC sometimes has some good buys, sometimes, but it is the luck of the draw.

Hi Grace,
I too love that kitchen.. Ruthie's is a wonderful designer.
I just recently found a tole chandelier on craigs (in LA) and found it to be in great condition. You might want to check craigs as well.
Ebay is a wonderful source try keywords - bamboo chandelier, tole chandelier, vintage flower chandelier.
I am sure you will find what you are looking for.
Good luck!

Grace -
Congrats on the new place! There's a little antique store on 1st Avenue, a couple of doors up from PSS 122 (between 9th and 10th I think?) that has stuff kind of like that most of the time. It's worth a look.

Gracious Home has an excellent hardware department with a lot of different styles in knobs; i've seen knobs in animal shapes there and I think I've seen fish. Restoration Hardware occasionally has fun retro knobs though their selection is extremely small. and I've even seen some fun knobs at Home Depot (which might be cheaper if cost is an issue.)

interknobs.com (located in NY but will ship anywhere) has tons of knobs, handles and pulls in a plethora of styles and finishes. maybe you can find something that works there.

forgot to mention that there is an excellent flea market on the UWS (yeah really!): location is a school-yard at 77th - 78th streets on Columbus Ave. it operates every Sunday all year (excepting lousy weather). i've bought several things there.

also for chandeliers don't forget the Housing Works stores. you can check out their auctions online. you can get great deals.

Hi Grace,
a great place to check online for Funky knobs is http://www.bauerware.com - they have an amazing collection of vintage, contemporary and traditional hardware - I really like their resin products.

What about the domino web site--dominomag.com? I think they have a feature where you can look up where to find pieces from the magazine

Urban Outfitters was mentioned, but this is exactly the kind of item its sister company Anthropology carries...

The outdoor Chelsea flea market has relocated to W. 39th bet. 9/10th Ave. and is now the "Hell's Kitchen Flea Market". It's pretty big and fun to walk the aisles to see everything. There's one chandelier vendor there but it's mostly chrystal chandeliers. In any case, it's worth the hour or 2 to peruse the place.

I found a metal and enamel chandelier at Olde Good Things on W. 24th - it was in the basement, it was filthy and needed to be rewired. $250, which is a bargain in there.

After cleaning and fixing, it is ravishing - the #1 love item in my house after my mate. I like to sit and stare at it.

I've recently become obsessed with the Tepper Gallery on 26th just off lex - they have monthly estate sales and there are always a lot of chandeliers. It is hit or miss but always interesting, usually three or four apartmenst worth of everything you can imagine in various states of disrepair, and it often goes for cheap as most of the bidders are dealers and they just want to move the stuff...does anyone know of any other good cheapie auctions in NYC?

Hi Grace,

I see that a few people beat me to the punch, but greatchandelier.com is a really good company to deal with. Spectrum home furnishing has been around for a while and they have a really great selection of chandeliers. I hope this was helpful.
