apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Good Questions: Mirrored Furniture in the USA?

7-2-mirrored-furniture.jpgHello AT,

I'm decorating an apartment for a friend and I'm looking all over for a mirrored dresser for her bedroom. I've found several great vendors online based in the UK, but I haven't found any located in the US. I'd like to avoid the expense (and potential danger of breaking) a mirrored piece from Europe.

Please, please, please help!

Thanks, Urbanista

Dear Urbanista,

This is a tough one and we don't know why. For some reason, very few folks want to dip their toes into this water (maybe breakage is a big issue). That said, we've been watching the market for the past few years and here our best list of mirrored resources:

MG and BW has a few nice pieces
The Bombay Company can be cheesy, but they do have a few useful pieces
Horchow. Ditto.
Legge Custom Glass is a new resource we just found. Untested.

The Paris Apartment does custom work on a small scale. Say hello to Claudia!
The Drama of the Mirrored Furniture Company
Venfield are a great resource for vintage

It should be noted that some of the MGBW pieces have been discontinued for that very reason - they have had many issues with breakage in delivery!

Z Gallerie carries a mirrored chest in it's furniture collection. I believe I also saw one in Bloomingdales furniture department recently.

You can find these at ABC, including at the Brox warehouse. If you want to drop some coin, you can also get them from Baker

I saw one lovely piece yesterday walking down on Lexington Avenue in NYC. I do not recall the exact crosstreet, but it was either 71st or 73rd on the west side of the avenue. I stopped to look at this piece of vanity which was stunning and mirrored. Don't know if it is waaaay out of your reach, but give it a shot, if you can take a walk there....

Urban Outfitters has a little group of mirrored furniture, although it looks like just the side table and dressing table are available on the website now. I seem to recall a large dresser in the store. I feel like this is the tail end of this trend (although I still swoon for it)--about six months ago I remember seeing these in all sorts of stores, including common places like Anthropologie and even Target.

There's a store on Bleecker Street it's a few blocks past Magnolia bakery on the south side of the street that has incredible mirrored furniture. Think the pieces are antique.

Try S. Cavallo Mirrors on Third Avenue, between 84th and 85th streets. They always have mirrored furniture in their window displays. Depending on your budget, it might be worth stopping by their showroom. (You have to be approved to access the online catalog on their website.)

Have you thought about covering the dresser she has now with aluminum foil, shiny side out?

Ikea Hacker had a post about coating a coffee table with mirrors--I'm sure you could translate that into other pieces.

Surprisingly, JC Penney has a mirrored collection that they categorize under their bath furniture section but some of these pieces could easily work in a bedroom and help achieve the look you are going for. Cut and paste the link below or just go to JCPenney.com/furniture/bathstorage
I love the vanity especially

Hmm, I hope the person who mentioned tin foil was joking. Creating a mirrored piece would actually probably not be that hard if you start with an extremely simple dresser that has no knobs, trim, etc. Then all you have to do is get pieces of mirror custom-cut for the top and drawer fronts - it would be better not to add it to the sides if at all possible due to the possibility of having some unpleasantly ugly joins.

I know this sounds like it would not work, but I actually added two pieces of mirror to the front doors on a vanity and it looks great. (The vanity already had some mirrored trim and a mirrored top that is loose.) It's important to get pretty thin pieces of mirror.

I don't know if you can order any of these online, but all have retailers all over the US. The Century Omni is particularly stunning and bunches beautifully if you need something wider.

I don't know why you wouldn't just make one yourself.

Start with a solid donor, something that has clean lines and a flat face (if possible).

Measure the drawer fronts as precisely as possible... make note of where the holes are for any hardware that needs to be mounted (like knobs).

If you prefer, get some construction paper and make templates... that way you can be sure that it's an exact copy of your drawer fronts.

Find a local glass shop to make and cut the mirrors for you. If you're worried about breakage you can use tempered glass or maybe even acrylic (plexiglass). But real glass would look much better.

They'll be able to cut any shape and size... even drill the holes for your knobs and so on. You could even ask for a protective (thin) metal frame for each mirror or just rounded edges.

Seriously, take a walk around your neighborhood and find a glass shop who can do the work.

(You can glue the mirrors on with construction adhesive or silicon, they'll tell you when you order the glass)

Urban Barn a modern furniture store based in Canada sells these items. I was looking at them this past weekend. They have night tables, vanities, etc. different sizes with most costing under $500.You may want to check if they deliver to US.

I've had my eyes on these too and was going to DIY them (as per Pete's suggestion) but seeing that they aren't that expensive I'll probably end up buying it.

I recently got some pieces of mirrored furniture for my bedroom from The French Furniture Company who do a large range of mirrored stuff.
They are based in UK but ship to US via insured couriers. So all the mirrors and furniture was insured for any intransit damage or loss.
http://www.thefrenchfurniturecompany.co.uk/WebsitePages/siteproduct.php?categoryId=14&subcategoryId=33

They do good quality stuff, I do want to go in for their French shabby Chic furniture next.

Good luck with your project.
