Good Questions: Modern Birdbath?

12-8-smithbirdbath.jpgHello AT,

Is there such a thing as a cool modern bird bath? I have a little front yard and the crowning jewel I'm looking for in my front yard is a cool bird bath to attract cute little sparrows to entertain my (indoor) cats. All I've found online and at garden centers are frilly heavy stone bird baths - not my style. Is there such a thing as a bird bath sans-serif?

Thanks, Amanda

Dear Amanda,

This question is WAY out of season, but birdbaths ARE on sale right now....

We bought one a number of year's ago from Smith & Hawken after looking a long time. They don't have the exact style anymore, but they do have < a href="http://www.smithandhawken.com/jhtml/site/catalog/Product.jhtml;$sessionid$BR3WWCAAAASNFUPWC0WHBNGR4YLKK2G4?PRODID=11410&CATID=74&PARENTCATID=17">The Hooped Birdbath and The Staked Birdbath. Anyone else??

I like that one. It's got kind of a trellis element to it. And it's not too solid, so it seems to kind of float there kind of like a hummingbird.

OK, I know this isn't a bird bath, but perhaps you would be interested in feeding the birds instead? Eva Solo makes a good looking feeder...

If you do a search on google for birdbath the 3rd hit will give you advice on a successfull, bird-attracting birdbath.

The 2nd item says, "make sure the bottom of the bathing basin has a rough surface. Many birdbath bottoms are often too slick to provide secure footing for birds, especially when a coat of algae forms on submerged surfaces."

Is it possible - pretty and effective?

This is expensive, but really modern and zen like.
