Good Questions: Modern Sconce Help?

10-20-sconce.jpgHello AT,

I'm having a tough time finding simple modern sconces at affordable prices. I'd love to know some resources for finding sconces.

For instance - these at the New York City Club Boutique Hotel:

Thanks, Rowe

Dear Rowe,

This is a little hard, but if you look in the right place, you'll find many good ideas. For modern sconces we'd check out:

YLighting
Artemide
Luceplan
Rico
Sine Motiv Sconces

Anyone else??

Forget the sconces. Where can I find that bedside table?

Ikea.

Some of their lighting is great, and amazingly cheap.

always remember:

"ikea" is the swedish acronym for "you get what you pay for" (loosely translated).

a $35 lamp is always going to be just that... a $35 lamp.

Restoration Hardware, though not known for its supermodern wares, has a huge selection of sconces. Some are traditional but some surely fit the bill of "modern". Not cheap but not bank breaking either.

This was my dilemma a couple of months ago and I searched the city high and low. I ended up getting some really great ones from a place on the Bowery - of course the name of the store escapes me but it is on the east side of the street and is something like 'Future Lighting'. Nice clean store, very helpful staff and I got a discount for buying 4 items. Restoration Hardware and Home Depot also had some nice options but neither of the stores had what I wanted in stock and I didn't have time to wait. Good luck.

i've found the website 'lighting universe' to be helpful, although it can be a little overwhelming with so many options.

here is one example:

There are endless sources for sconces online, and if you can find the manufacturer/brand for one you like you can comparison shop and get the prices down even further.

Lighting By Gregory is said to be a pain to work with, but does make it easy to scroll through a gazillion choices; Bellacor has lots of inexpensive choices (see this one for under $100: http://www.bellacor.com/detail.cfm?Cat=47&ItemID=41646&Loc=results_1_page_2&Page=2&UserID=55F74DCF-F91B-9AB0-328CD3F86E47FA7B&Link=Menu&Track=0 ). Other resources include Home Annex and HomeClick and even eBay.

I just bought these from Pottery Barn.

I got the polished nicket finish and I think they could be called 'modern.'

http://www.nova68.com/ has classic modern light fixtures as well as furnishings.

I believe they give designer discounts. Try emailing them to see if there are any discounts to be had.

Also I love these lights from Eureka.

and

Lighting Universe says they can give quotes on Eureka fixtures. They are not usually available through stores only lighting reps to architects and designers.

This month's House Beautiful features several beautiful lamps from www.circalighting.com, which I see has a large selection of sconces. I've been looking for a large, contemporary swing-arm similar to one in a recent issue of Oprah at Home. I have yet to find it.

Thank you everyone! I love the resources that you've come up with. With so many viable options, it's now time to face the amateur designer's most difficult challenge: actually choosing. :-)

West Elm has sconces basically exactly like these in your photo and they are so reasonable and look great. Just saw them today when I was there.

Gentlemen:
I need "picture tube lights" to illuminate shelves in a home library. I understand from your rep in Longwood, FL you have same... chrome and brushed...ideal size is 24 - 30", they will be placed horizontally at the top of the cases, about 80" from floor. Will they illuminate the bottom shelf too?
How far do they project?

I buy my sconces from http://www.alluminare.com. The best part about it is that they are completely customizable.
