A simple modern design is easy to make your own stencil... blow up a design you like on a copier or computer, trace onto mylar, and cut out.

I also think the Brits are a great resource for a modern take on stencil art. Changing Rooms (Linda and Lawrence, especially) used great modern stencils quite often. But "modern" mostly in their wild scale, not their pattern, per se.

I stenciled, am stenciling my apt. I tend towards Morrocan and Islamic designs. I found the best selection from a company in

Royal design studio is good too, but quite classic and florid.

but i would try making your own stencil a shot first. it's guaranteed to be unique & special that way.

Another vote for the stencil library...best selection I could find...reasonable prices overall and considering they are shipping from UK. If you are good with an exacto knife, you can get uncut versions of most/all of their designs which saves some $. Best of luck with your project!

How about something like this in the "Diamonds" or "Dentro" patterns:

You could always find a small modern design you like and print it out then use a projector to place on you're wall this way you can also move it around to see which spot you like it best in without having to tape and untape the stencil. Then just pencil the outlines and paint away.

I did this in my last apartment but just added at touch of the wall color to acrylic matte medium. It worked really well and seems like what you're looking for. Have fun. I got my stencils from stencil-library too. Also, if its a large area, buy an extra stencil although reusable I gunked mine up a lot.

Well, this is a well-timed question for me.

I'm planning on stencilling a border in a room, and I'm wondering what is the best way to figure out the proper spacing for the design. Do you find the center of the wall and work your way toward the edges, or do you just decide that the stencils will be X number of inches apart, then somehow make the stencil carry over onto the next wall, if need be?
