Good Questions: More Shelves Like This?

2-1-shelf.jpgHello AT,

I had found the perfect chunky floating shelves for my living room at Pottery Barn (left) but just realized that they're discontinued and no longer stocked in the stain I wanted (espresso). I can't find similar shelves anywhere. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Chris

ikea has always had something that is similar to this -- the lack shelf. you can get it in a number of sizes and finishes. they are pretty sturdy too -- i had a few of them in my last apartment...

I also have the lack shelves and they are great. I also have the lancaster shelves from hold everything...they support a heavier weight.

The chunky wall shelves from West Elm are somewhat similar... but you'll need to head to a hardware store to pick up better toggle bolts or anchors & screws to mount them properly... b/c the ones they give you w/ the shelf are just terrible. but the look is the same.

Do you know how long ago the shelves were discontinued? You could try calling some of the PB outlets and see if any ended up there.

Yeah I've bought them at Hold Everything.

I can not BELIEVE they discontinued these!! First Thomas Paul discontinuing pillows, now THIS.

These shelves were gorgeous and none out there/elsewhere as "slabby."

DWR used to have something similar to the Lack... I was a Lack fan until I read the tag that said they could only support, like, 11 lbs or something absurd like that.

Michael--
Good to hear you like the Lancaster, as I've been considering them for an upcoming project. They have exposed (but nicely done) brackets, though, right?

I've run in to this kind of thing before -- big store discontinues item I already have and want to match.

I've always been able to find the same thing, usually new, at Ebay, and so did a search for your shelves..."pottery barn shelves espresso" was my search term. I found three matches that look identical, including the ones at "Ebay stores," whatever those are.

Only one caveat emptor -- be careful to check the feedback rating of the seller to ensure they're more or less reputable.

dave in boston--
If you ever run across PB's Braden Jute Rug in Cranberry on eBay, let me know!! I've searched there without too much success. Lots of the Natural, but nary a Cranberry.

P2 - the rug you want isn't on this page? http://LessLink.com/braden/jute/rug/

Some of the Lancaster shelves are on sale! Does anyone know what the corner shelves look like? Are they meant to join two sets of shelves at a corner (i.e. eliminate the gap between)?

Justin--
Nope. (But thanks for the search!!)

The new jute Cranberry (Redwood?) rug is a contender, but the Braden was almost 50/50 Cranberry and warm Natural color. I was proposing it for a seasonal porch, where, in the warmer months, you'd play up the natural jute/linen color, and in cooler months, play up the cranberry. This way, they wouldn't have to switch out the rug, but instead change things like pillows, lamp shades and slipcovers. Even found a great linen/cranberry bird-motif toile at Ballard Designs that REALLY made the whole plan work, since that too, worked with either season.

Bummer.

Try IKEA they have something very similar.

I have all of my glassware, a tea pot full of splenda and a painting on one ikea lack shelf, and a cake plate a vase and 6 bottles of wine on the other.
I think you just have to use a molly and screw them into the studs.

I make floating shelves with crown molding or straight boards or any look people desire. The will support 75 lbs. and are REAL wood! I started making these after looking at Target and coming out SEVERELY disappointed. All I could get there were basically plastic material covered with paint (to look like stained wood.) They were made of thin wood and the mounting brackets were made to go over the head of an almost too small sized screw head. I beleive in quality craftsmanship and just didn't find that in those. Anyways drop me a line if you want to know more paragon_renovations1616@msn.com

Does anyone know anything about the quality of "smart furniture?"

I'm intrigued by the flexibility, simplicity, and affordability but have no idea how nice these look or how strong they are....
