apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Good Questions: Name This Lamp from Domino?

12-6-lampdomino.jpgHello AT,

I love this site and find tons of useful and good ideas here for my future first apartment (I'm a planner!). I'm hoping someone can tell me where I can find this lamp which was shown in the bedroom of the cover story for the September 2006 issue of Domino Magazine. 3/4 of the base seems to be made of cork which I think is pretty clever.

Any ideas? Thanks, Kay*

i love this lamp, too -- i hope someone knows where to get it. domino is usually good about giving buying info, but i think they skipped it here.

It's not the exact lamp, but my favorite antique store here in Norfolk has a really great pair of cork and chrome lamps. I've seen these and they're awesome! And he'll ship anywhere.

If you email Domino (findit@dominomag.com) they will give you the source.

amber-

thank you! i hate to be a bummer but i just called and bought those. i've been looking for those since the magazine came out (the real ones from the mag are super pricey) and since they're in my hometown i couldn't resist. now i can just pick them up on my way home for the holidays. thanks so much for sharing the tip- i didn't even know about this shop. now i have something to check out on the way home ;)

Grace,
I think we've talked about Norfolk and stuff before, if you've got any extra time while you're home, I'd love to meet up for coffee or something!

Hmmmmm...would make a great DIY project. Just buy a cylindrical lamp base and glue cork to it. I may just try this!

Wow - so cool to see my question posted!
Amber those lamps look great! But since Grace has bought 'em :( do you think they would have a second set? I don't live in the US so I would have to get them shipped...

Kiminottawa - i was thinking of it as a DIY but how could I glue cork to a cylidrical base...is cork bendable? Wouldn't I have to use a sqaure/rectangle base?

I purchased those exact lamps on e-bay a couple of months ago for $50 apiece. Just search "cork lamp" and see what you get.

cork is very pliable - you could definitely put it on a cylindrical base - probably would have a hard time around a sphere - but cylindrical no problem!

You can but thin sheets of cork at Home Depot.

Kay

I too just bought the 70's lamps (that Grace just purchased) from an antique store here in the Seattle area. I found them on Craigslist. Since then, I have been seeing these lamps everywhere and I actually just found a picture of myself at 4 yrs old in my grandmother's house and she had these lamps! I figure it's destiny :)

GRACE!
I forgot to ask you for your zip code (at the residence where you receive your charge card bills). I need it before I can run the charge for your cool lamps.
P.S.
For the others wondering about these lamps - I have no more (sold a single that is headed to ICELAND), but if you contact me, I'll file your request. Maybe we'll get lucky!
Thanks very much,

I fifth the ebay--"cork lamp" always turns up something similar if not cooler. Those of you headed to smaller cities for the holidays, I'd check out your local antique malls. I agree that cork is pliable, but I wouldn't bother with gluing it to a lamp base, especially since it would not square up against the base.
