Hello AT,
Do you know of any architectural artifacts/salvage places in or near Manhattan? I hear there is a good one up in Harlem but can't seem to find any details.
Thank You, Glenn

I bought few pieces at http://www.architecturalclassics.com
there's a place called "demolition depot" on 125th around 2nd ave. that's probably what you're thinking of. i've never been in but have passed it on the bus to laguardia many times and thought it looked neat. the sign seems to be made entirely of salvaged machine parts.
oh, you have it already. that's what i get for commenting before i look after the jump. :)
One of my own sources: http://www.oldegoodthings.com/newstore.htm
Oops, sorry, didn't realise you already have that.
Demolition depot is massive, but great. There are 6 loft floors of everything house related. Things are organized well -- almost too well. You have to write down a tag number, then check the computer for a price (at least that's the way it was a couple of years ago when I was there). That's probably because it's a little pricey, but that may be a product of its being in NYC as much as anything.
hey glenn
demolition depot is sincerely wonderful - but it ain't cheap. the building itself is old and dusty with the dank smell of a musty woolworths store (speaking of woolworths - why oh why did they have to go away - they had the best table lamps and christmas boxes and ...) bummer/ anyways, be sure to check out all the jam-packed floors/ the staircase is hiding in the back and the staff is er - relaxed. be prepared to sift, sort and watch your toes/ lots of old cobwebby sinks, doors, tubs/ a little piece of heaven, if you ask me/ fyi: their website does not mirror the unfancy flavor of the store/happy hunting
This place was recommended to me, but I'll be honest I haven't checked it out yet. maybe someone out here has.
If you're looking for something specific, I recommend the Web.
My two cents: Back in 1999 I gutrenovated the fireplace in my apartment so that it would work again. As part of the renovation, I shopped for fireplace mantles in all the salvage places in NYC, and had almost settled on one in Urban Antiquities (I think that was the name) on Second Avenue and Houston, when, one morning, I got the NYtimes and there in the "metro" section was a story about a building that had just gone into slow-motion collapse on Second Avenue and Houston .... sure enough, it was Urban Antiquities. The building was filled with marble statuary and cast-iron bathtubs, and the stupid owners had decided to put a new wide door in an unsupported load-bearing wall.
I wound up ordering my antique mahogany fireplace mantle from a salvage place in Ann Arbor over the Web. Much better deal.
You might also want to check out Moon River Chattel in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
I just got an email from them. They are having a sale this weekend. They sell salvage stuff, as well as smaller vintage and vintage-looking items.
From Wednesday March 1st to Sunday March 5th, Moon River Chattel will
be having a sale on unfinished large and small tables, plant stands,
and worktables. The sale will be at our Warehouse, which is located
across the street from the shop at 59 Grand St. All pieces will be sold
as is. Our business hours are Tue-Sat 12-7 pm, Sun 12-5 pm. Come on out
and take a look at some of the wonderful pieces we have.

thanks y'all for your suggestions - i actually went to demolition depot the other day - found some great stuff but unfortunately a bit out of my price range to say the least -- i used to be from the chicago area and it might be worth your while to take a look at stuart grannan's place - architectural artifacts - www.architecturalartifacts.com - their selection is perhaps the best i've seen and the prices - more - umm - reasonable
cheers

Demolition Depot/Irreplaceable Artifacts has a large location in harlem. The best thing they have are doors - the rest is very pricey and not all that exciting.
A word of warning: they are not organized, misquoted a price, lost a check and offered nothing to make up for their mistake. Browse at your own peril.
there is a place called stans emporium in upstate new york. kingston in ulster county to be exact. also another place called stans. they hav a huge warehouse of old stuff
