Good Questions: Old Fashioned Diner Mug Source?

4-26-mug.jpgHello AT,

My friends and I are all enamored with the sort of mugs that I associate with old-fashioned diners. They're white, thick, and curve perfectly to fit your hand. They look like this (at left), but without the logo:

Do you know of any place that I can get these? Restaurant supply stores, maybe? I'd love to get a few for my new apartment.

Thanks so much! Rebecca

Dear Rebecca,

We love those too and bought a bunch of them at Fishs Eddy a few years back. We're sure they still sell them as they are classic. We also found a few other links:

This is a nice one!

Anyone else?

There's also Buffalo China, which is carried at Williams Sonoma.

restaurant supply stores as well, which might be a trip to Astoria where a lot of restaurant supply stores are. But Fish Eddys is much more convenient.

If you're on your way to Fish's Eddy in Manhattan, there is a restaurant supply store on 17th between 5th and Broadway a store or two away from the Subway's. Might be worth it to check it out.

Try some of the restaurant supply places on Bowery if you don't want to go too far out. Or, you can do what my friends did for me when I mentioned I wanted diner mugs--they "borrowed" a set of four from a diner. Hey, I didn't do it, but my morning coffee sure does taste good in them.

You can always ask the manager of your favorite diner if he will sell you a set.

Please ignore that Weego comment. It's POSH in Chicago's site you want to check out.

If you ever road-trip-it upstate...there's a place in Ravena called "The Ravena Barn" that's basically a thrift store. They have shelves and shelves full of truly old mugs. Most are less than $1.25 each.

Next time you're on a road trip, stop in a Cracker Barrel. Seriously. They have perfect diner mugs and the manager will sell you brand new ones for $1.50 each. (matching saucers were $.75, I think). They're made by Buffalo China. My husband was on a two-year quest for the perfect plain diner mug... I never thought he'd find love at Cracker Barrel, but there you go.

You are supposed to steal those from Denny's, silly.

The Farmer's Diner in Quechee, Vermont (http://www.farmersdiner.com) sells them, with great Wendall Barry quotes. I don't see them on their website but you could try calling.
