Hello AT,
I just bought a new apartment in Manhattan and the radiator is missing. I have thought of everything and everyone to ask, and no one seems to install or sell old radiators. Do you know what to do, or who to call?
Thanks, trevor o.

Dear Trevor,
What an interesting question. We would have thought that there were many places to get old radiators, but you may be right that they get tossed so quickly that no one holds on to them. The place to look - we think - would be Brooklyn, where everyone is trying to refurbish their old houses and stick with vintage supplies. Here are our top links in that direction. Use the key words "cast iron radiators" as well as "radiators" when searching.

Craigslist has a bunch
OldHouse Web.com - this is mecca.
Even Image Googling will yield good links
This probably isn't much use, but there's a great radiator lying in the middle of Sterling Place in Prospect Hts, Brooklyn. I've admired it walking to work this week. Someone must have thrown it out.
The Jan/Feb issue of This Old House has an article on old radiators that will tell you how to choose one. Old House Journal's Web site (oldhousejournal.com) does a list of vendors. Clicking through the list, there's an Olde Goode Things in NYC. Great salvage is often in more remote locations (cheaper rent), so it may be worth your while to take a drive up to the salvage place in Albany (sorry, don't recall the name) or some other intermediate location. Massachusetts is very good for architectural salvage.
We have a bunch of really cool Victorian radiators that have come out of our house. They are all in prefect working condition. We added central a/c and forced air heat to the house and that is the reason that they were removed. Don't know how to get my contact info to you though.
Adding on to the radiator question: I have two original metal radiator covers that are caked with layers of paint. They are original to the building, 1920's or so.
I'd like to have them stripped and sealed. Anyone know of any good resources in the NY metro area?

these guys are experts at reconditioning radiators, i have just installed 8. if your project is large, these are the guys to call. if your project is small, shipping costs may discourage you. this company is based in montreal. good luck
try calling a boiler repair service, they usually have a radiator graveyard.
Just wondering - i have small radiators in front of large windows with wide shelves and want to consider the option of covering them so i can increase my sitting space...any budget minded ideas?
Try the Demolition Depot, on 125th Street.
Ooops, I thought URL meant to add one. You can click on my name above or use this one:

Cover them with grill / mesh work, framed by a wood enclosure. I put a Corian counter top on the unit, which was not so wise, but a granite one would be perfect. Gives heat and a nice buffet table :)
For a HUGE selection of nice, inexpensive salvage radiators, I recommend a place on Myrtle avenue in Brooklyn (search Brownstoner.com for the name & address.) We needed a specific, unusual shape and size for our kitchen renovation, and thought we were going to have to have something imported from the UK for thousands of dollars. We ended up finding a 1940s deco one at this place for $50-- perfect dimensions and everything. It just needed cleaning, priming, and a coat of paint. Any good plumber can install a salvage radiator for you.
Trevor...or anyone else.
I have an old cast iron radiator...round top..not ornate....but it is a large one and I would be happy to give it to you if you can remove it from my apt in Manhattan. It would take at least two persons to carry it down 2 flights of steps.
It is not attached to anything...its ready to go and yes it works fine. I just wanted something smaller and more modern so it has no purpose for me.
