Good Questions: Perfect Cabinet for Wall Mount TV?

10-19-flatscreen.jpgHello AT,

I recently bought a 42 inch plasma TV which I'm planning on wall mounting. That's a good thing, but I have a dilemma: what kind of cabinet should I buy that will work with the wall mounted TV without obstructing it? I'm thinking a low lying long cabinet around 2-3 feet in height and 5-6 feet in width so that the only focal point on that wall is the TV...

But turns out, I cant find any cabinet like that anywhere. Firstly, does that seem like a good idea? and secondly, if so, where do I go about looking for a cabinet like that?

Thanks for all your help, J

Dear J,

That sounds like a good idea and you might want to check out the thread from yesterday that was very close.

Our personal favorites are the following:

The Zurich from Room and Board
The Strata from Blu Dot (we've bought a bunch of these, but we're not seeing it on their site right now....)
Avion from BDI (their other stuff is good too)

Anyone else??

How about a custom build?

For mid-century modern furniture, try a Paul McCobb record cabinet (5 feet long, 24" tall), with sliding grass cloth doors. Just saw it on eBay a few days ago. Perfect to store TiVo, DVD Players, etc.

CB2 has a low media storage cabinet that looks kind of like the Zurich from Room and Board at a lower price; click my name. It also comes in white.

I am considering getting this one to match my wallmounted display, but haven't managed to find anything out about the quality. Anyone know if these are decently constructed?

Turns out thatt 5-6 feet may not be enough; because they wont hide the power plug point. i need a cabinet that is around 6-8 ft. but have a budget of only 1k.
is there anything I can find within that range?

sorry I can't help you with your problem - I don't even own a TV but maybe you can help me - I am looking for a great wall mounted swing arm lamp like yours in the picture - can you tell me where to get it?

thanks!

Go to the Chicago AT site and look at Andreas's Greektown loft. He fashioned a sweet wall credenza out of IKEA kitchen cabinets and they look unbelievably cool.

Quite a few Eames and Knoll credenzas can be found on eBay, but arranging shipping can be a pain and a 6'-9' length would be hard to find. At this budget, you would be much better off placing two smaller cabinets side by side. This approach is much more versatile as well in the event of a move.

That being said, if you're willing to go up a little bit I would visit Modernica and get a custom-made Eames Case Study shelving unit. They come up to 94" wide and if you're okay with one unit in height (around 20") it should be under $1,500 for a basic unit with side panels and sliding shelves.

On the discount side, I put two Ikea Effektiv units side-by-side in my own home (where they are filled to bursting with shoes!). They offer many customization options to fit into different decor, are an adequate height/sturdiness to double as seating and two units are approximately 6' in length. I think that I paid less than $300 for the pair.
