Where can I purchase Plastica's Bento Boxes in Manhattan. Thanks, Therese
Where can I purchase Plastica's Bento Boxes in Manhattan. Thanks, Therese
Regina blogged them here last summer. As far as Manhattan retailers, we would try:
Lancelotti
Broadway Panhandler
BUT they are also available directly from the Plastica website.
Has anyone seen them in a Manhattan store?
Pearl River Mart. In the basement.

I saw some like these (though I think they were aluminum) at World Market.
They had 2 sizes, one reg. with 3 compartments, and a small size with 2 compartments.

They're cute but you can't microwave them. I suggest you check out Mr. Bento: http://www.amazon.com/Zojirushi-Bento-Stainless-Steel-lined-Silver/dp/B000246GSE/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1226604524&sr=8-1

Re: microwavable bento boxes--
The only really safe thing to microwave is glass (and I've never seen a bento made from it). I'd just transfer to a bowl you keep at work and wash there.

Why is only glass safe? Are there recent studies?

They have similar containers at Pearl River. I don't know if they're "name brand" but they're identical.

Mid-C Frank--
A lot of plastics are deemed "microwave-safe" by the FDA but only those that are actually labeled as such should be assumed actually microwave-safe. (The others leech chemicals when heated.) I guess I just don't want to risk it. Melamine, which is what the above bento box is made out of (I think), is definitely NOT microwave safe. My stepfather is an environmental chemist and he freaks out about microwaving tupperware containers. So, I dunno. He's a smart guy and not reactionary normally so I trust his judgement.

I saw someone with one of these on the bus the other day. Can I say they are freaking huge!!! I mean, you can carry enough food in these things to last 2-days. Maybe I just have a small stomach.
I pack my lunch in 2 frigoverre small glass containers and carry a couple of pieces of fruit. Voila. There are some leaking issues lately - not sure why...
Yeah - I've stopped microwaving plastic container with food, too. Just have read too much to feel good about it. Occasionally, I do. But if I have a choice, I don't.
