Good Questions: Platform Bed with Wheels?

3-11-wheelbarrow-bed.jpg

Hi AT! I am trying to build a platform bed like the one in this picture. The platform stands on wheels. From the research I have done the wheels look to be the same as the ones used on wheel barrows, but I am having a hard time finding brackets like the ones in the picture. Any ideas? Lauren

A plate caster includes the wheel, bracket, bearings, and mounting plate. Grainger has some; look for "wheels", then "plate casters" from their home page.

Interesting idea. Makes the bed a great big hand truck (so to speak) come moving day.

It is called a wheel and caster.
Google it, there are other resources besides this one I know of.

I would not choose a caster with pneumatic tire as shown in the photo.
Photo styling is not always practical.

For real life you need a lock mechanism on the wheel to stop the bed from rolling around.

Put some sweet shocks on it while you're at it! LOL Tune 'em just right and you can really get that bed rockin'.

Or, for that matter, some 25" chrome spinners would look pretty badass.

http://www.varadcastors.com/products.htm there are some similar at the bottom of the page but i agree that this isn't very practical - definitely need something that locks.

I bought some casters from a company in Atlanta called Northern Tool. I combined them with a cheap shelf from Ikea, and I love the look! There are a lot of neat colors out there, and definitely make sure you buy at least two wheels that lock!

I bought some casters from a tool company in Atlanta called Northern tool. They have several different types of good looking, industrial casters. Make sure you buy at least two locking casters though!

I combined mine with a cheap Ikea shelf to make a TV stand, and I love the look!

There are downsides to this, if you're amorously inclined. Make sure the bed is no where near stairs or other hazards.

This looks really interesting! I hope you'll share the finished product and process with us when you're done!

haha i'd love to see the finished product too. I keep thinking that if there aren't locks, you'll have to resort to cinder blocks...and that is just not a good look! ;-)

I'm with CJL. I've been yearning to take my boyfriend's bed OFF it's wheels!! It ends up halfway across the room...

THANKS FOR ALL OF THE GREAT IDEAS... especially you Dewi, your sarcasm is noted! I am hoping to have the platform made of MDF then I will just band the edges with a nicer wood. I am going to put hidden legs as supports in the middle of the platform, so that should help to lock it into place. I did do some extensive "googling" for wheels and casters; I just had a difficult time finding one that was 16" high. I actually just found this today, they are a little pricy for my taste, but I think they have the same aesthetic as the ones in the picture.

THANKS AGAIN!

From experience I can tell you that even with locking wheels the bed will be shaking/moving quite a bit when you turn or move. Not necessarily a problem, but something to consider.

May I ask, besides dressing the bed and cleaning beneath it, what other practical purpose would adding wheels that big and look like that serve? It certainly can't be aesthetics.

I don't want you to drill into MDF. Please consider a few layers of plywood instead. MDF can handle weight if it's not stressed. It will fail the first time you rub one out.

The castors I've found are no higher than 9" and you'd have to paint the center - the wheels are rubber, only 6 1/2" and fixed/swivel mount.

i slept on a bed with wheels once. not fun. the slightest move made the whole bed move. no headboard had my pillow sliding down between the bed and wall an awful lot.

if you can manage those problems, should be good. it does look cool.

If you want a tractor bed, you have to shop at a tractor store. Sarahrae is always posting about the neat stuff you find at a farm supply store that's more industrial than a regular hardware and home improvement store, as well as how to work that look at home.

Is it just me or do those look like wheels/casters from a large wheelbarrow?

This reminds me of an episode of Gilmore Girls. Lane Kim was on bed rest, and was going to have to miss her baby shower. They just wheeled the whole bed down the street to her party. No tractor wheels on her antique bed, though.

I think those wheels (with locks) would look great on a little boy's bed (with a car themed room). But not a grown up's. :/
