As is often the case, I'm in love with this ottoman from Buck House, but not in love with its $3200 price tag. Does anyone have any ideas where I can find something similar? Or, how I could go about making one of my own that would still be as sturdy as an ottoman (and not as wobbly as a stack of pillows!)? — Lia

This question makes us long for the now defunct Blueprint Magazine. Luckily, their blog, Bluelines, is still up. They did a DIY pillow ottoman that might suit your purpose. We think you could recreate the look of the Buck House ottoman using more luxurious pillows, but following the general Bluelines instructions. Any other suggestions for Lia?

find a base of an ottoman that you really like, and bring it to an upholsterer along with photos of the look you want to create. Instead of $3200, it might cost you $320.

For the second ottoman... You can buy a TV stand for around $20 from Target or from Big Lots. Use only the base with the wheels and stack the pillows on top of each other. I remember seeing floor pillows at COSTCO.

have you seen this ottoman in person? whenever I'm trying to copy something I find the best way to figure out how to do it is to go to the store and poke at it a lot...it'll tell you what density pillows are best, how to attach the pillows and all those other details you can't see in person. Of course if this is one of those catalog only things...nevermind

Not exactly identical to your dream ottoman, but here is a DIY project that approximates it (and looks cute):
