Good Questions: Resources for Interior Doors?

3-9-1-Panel-Door.jpg

Hi, I just got done remodeling my closet and went through a whole back-and-forth about whether to use bi-fold doors, sliding doors, regular doors, etc. Now, I've decided that I’m going to replace all of the old, cheap, repainted and cracking interior doors in our apartment that just cannot be salvaged any longer. I’ve been looking for single panel doors for a long time! And I'm having a hard time finding them anywhere or finding places that sell doors. My question is inspired by the recently posted Jackson Heights Two Bedroom FSBO where the owner has single panel doors that are just what I’m looking for! Where I can find them? I’m in Brooklyn, NYC. Thanks, Jessica

We are thinking about doing the same thing. Lowes has doors, but not the single panel kind like this.

If your doors are cracking because of ageing and regular use and not because of you hammering them then your landlord must pay new interior doors!

As for Menards/Midwest Manufacturing, they are not available in NYC and they do not ship.

Check your local architectural salvage store or craigslist in the materials section. You probably can find an old door (in good condition) and get someone to cut and sand it down to fit your jamb.

Lowe's or Home Depot can order any kind of doors you want. I got some special sizes and styles when I remodeled, and Lowe's was great.

Plus, Lowe's delivers.

Home Depot, they usually have them on display but they have to be ordered. I bought with frosted glass pane. I think they are Feather River. You could also look at a salvage.

My other comment seems to have disappeared, and only my second one is there, hanging out and looking silly. What I said previously was...

Lowe's and Home Depot can order you any doors you want. When I remodeled, I needed some special sizes and styles and Lowe's was great. Got me just what I needed.

my experience with Lowes' with custom-ordered doors was terrific.. their "house brand" is eminently customizable.. (I think it's their housebrand... Relia-built).

I have been researching this same question (single, flat panel doors for NYC apartment house, to match old doors).

Lowe's does have something for special order along those lines made by Simpson Doors, but it is nearly $400.00 per door. Humabuilt has something identical (see above) for under $200/door). (I have no connection to them).

You can try buying old doors, which we did, but 1) you don't find a large enough set of matching doors ; 2) the hinge position and knob positions probably won't match yours; 3) patching and sanding and gnerally sizing the old doors really isn't that simple, even for a highly dedicated DIYer.

Of course, my comments here are assuming that you really want something closely resembling the original apartment house doors. Otherwise, you can get something at Lowe's or HD (quite different but serciveable) for as little as $30 per door. Don't expect wood and don't expect a style match though.

Simpson makes a door like that. We ordered the primed MDF version throughout our house and love them. Very durable and MDF doesn't shrink and swell as much with humidity changes. Reduced tree usage as well. Google "Simpson Shaker door". Comes right up.

You may want to also check out Dykes Lumber in Brooklyn. They have door styles not available at Lowes and Home Depot. I needed taller doors and they were able to special order.

Eddie's in Clinton Hill (corner of Greene Ave and Grand Ave.) sells used doors and refinished doors. Open 12-6 M-F

This is a national company...you can search for local dealers on their site.

However, I don't know how pricey they are.

I think most lumber yards sell doors, but often you need to special order them.

I recently went to Build it Green NYC in Astoria, and they have tons of salvaged doors (kind to the environment, kind on the budget too). I was disappointed in the rest of the stuff, but if I were looking for doors, I would definitely check them out first. Particularly if you are into recycling.

nkr707, it looks like the birch tree duvet from Pottery Barn. I don't think they sell it any more, but there are some on ebay.
