Good Questions: Rug For My New Togo Sofa?

6-8-togo-rug-1.jpg
6-8-togo-thumbs.jpg

Dear Apartment Therapy, I've finally got my dream sofa - the Togo. Now I'm facing the next challenge: buying the right rug. The little field of flowers rug has been my dream rug, but I want to make sure that I make the right purchase. The question is, with my Togo pieces and my dark wood floor, is the purple/grey rug the right choice? If not, what color/texture do you recommend? (The red version won't do because my husband and I both feel that it is too "noisy"). Any suggestions will be highly appreciated. Thank you, imcaffeine

We're jealous of your Togo! We like the idea of Tord Boontje's Filed of Flowers rug (and think it will look amazing in your space) but shudder at the upkeep. Who has suggestions?

that rug will look amazing in the space and work perfectly with the yellow chair! go for it.

1st congrats on your wonderful purchase! the whole set looks great together. i think boontje's purple rug would look absolutely magnificent in your room (it's on sale at DWR). i've only seen a small sample of the rug but it looked amazing & i understand it's well made. i do wonder how it's cleaned and about the upkeep but all this may be worth it to you. it's certainly a beauty & i think the texture, color would nicely set off your togo furniture. please update with a photo when you've selected your rug!

Cool and comfy! Congrats. The rug your loving looks comfy too but how in the world do you clean it? What about a longish, soft shag rug? Have fun with artwork and lamps you add to the space. The rug could keep in the neutral family and add color with a huge, abstract, colorful piece of artwork.

I write this post on my own (red) Togo :-)

While I love Tord Boontje (have some in my daughter's room), I wonder how that rug will sit under the Togo -- it is rather bumpy. Plus, those are 2 extremely strong designs side-by-side -- I'd have to see them actually together to see if they can live together.

How about this rug? It has the sort of Boontje design elements, similar colour, but is not so 3-D.

A classic pairing would be a huge super heavy natural flokati...

Or there are these options:

p.s. the Tabriz in the Ivory and Sand colourway

p.s. my concern would be that the Boontje rug, being felt, would pill and wear poorly over the long-term -- that is in addition to the cleaning issue. Since the living room gets daily use, and relatively heavy use, I would find another location for that rug -- one that is less likely to get spills, and less general use. Just the concerns that spring to my mind.

The field of flowers rug is fantastic but if you need something a little more liveable or budget friendly, would you consider a variegated shag? You could do a solid color or a maybe something with tonal variety (shades of yellow in light to dark). If you have a piece of artwork that ties the white, yellow and perhaps a 3rd color (which could be the same as the rug), then you're in good shape. And I could absolutely see some acrylic or glass end tables.

The rug is perfect for that furniture, but I do agree -- the upkeep has to be rough! Hope you have no pets!

I think the purple looks good (def. no on the red), but just from that sample, the rug looks like a pain in the butt. Seems like it would be cooler as art, than as a rug. But hey, if you don't mind the work, get it.

I worry that it's an overly repetitive motif: the couch/ottoman are ultra-squishy without too much structure (in appearance anyway), and the carpet is quite similar. Even though they're not the same color, it's all too matchy-matchy for me.

I like the elements separately, but I'd feel like I was visiting you in a house decorated by Claus Oldenburg, or that if I sat on the couch, I'd sink into it like quicksand, and it would disappear into the carpet in the same way.

I just happened to notice that a DWR store in SF has the large purple rug in their sample sale for $1980 if anyone is interested. Perhaps other DWRs are selling their floor samples too. I wonder how they've held up to heavy use in the store.

if you go to the Soho DWR they have a 2 foot square of the rug that you can borrow to try it at home with your sofa. give them a call 212-475-0001

Me, I'd darken the floors to a near-ebony color -- they're a bit reddish in the picture, and that's undercutting the cool-color vibe you've introduced with furniture and paint. If the floors were darker, you could easily go without a rug at all.

Thank you so much Aaron and everybody who replied!

We've actually just made the purchased and received the rug. (The questions were sent a few weeks ago, and I'm an impatient person as you could probably already tell.)

We got a good deal at DWR in the Memorial day weekend so we made the purchase. It arrived last week - and it looks fantastic! I'd love to share some pictures, but am I allowed to post the link here?

I'd also like to point out that the little book cubes under the window are from Way Basics, the SF based company that makes those storage cubes with recycled paper. I've found them through AT, so thank you very much.

I understand the concern over the maintenance issue. I'll vacuum it in a few days, so I hope that it works well - the instruction is that one should vacuum it every week. We don't have pets but I have a husband (huh!) but I think that we'll be fine - I feel more comfortable with it than a white shag rug.

Lisa from Montreal, it's a brilliant idea! Our floor is new, so I won't mess with it yet, but we might do so a few years later when it needs work.

Akay, thanks for the comments. I think that what I am going to do from this point on is to add more muscular and structured furniture (TV stand) and wall art (a fierce abstract painting in mind). I think that the contrast will be very interesting. I have a few ideas on my mind and I'll need to save (after this splurge)and realize the ideas.

Thanks again every single of you:)

Really odd association.

The requires that you not vacuum it with a powered head. You must remember to turn that feature off. My friend's housekeeper forgot. Now, it is a bunch of stems, not flowers, is many spots.

That said, I like a completely flat option of some sort. Or maybe, the Rug Company rugs mention above. Also, check out the rugs by Madeline Weinrib. I like the cotton weave stripes. http://www.madelineweinrib.com/ama/cotton_flatweaves_stripes/index.html.

Remember that the only way to know if a rug truly works is to take it home for a few days. You need time to live with it to know for sure.

Good luck. Let us see what you decide.

Sofa doesn't really go w/the apartment...

posted by m on June 14th 2009 at 11:26am

Timmy, Thank you. Here comes the vacuum report - I'm using an old vacuum cleaner that does not have the power head function. I tried the flat head and that is extremely easy, but I was afraid that dirt would hide under the flowers, so I used the tube only to vacuum as well. Flowers were sucked up(almost like combing the flowers), but not damaged at all because, once again, my vacuum cleaner does not have the powered head with wheels that suck and catch everything in.

James, thank you for the story. That' why I don't use a house keeper - much of the material in the apartment are different from the "home depot standard", so we actually use many kinds of cleaners on different surfaces anyway. I don't believe or expect an average house keeper can figure all these out. So I'd rather spend two hours a week to do my own chores. Dear husband is willing to share the chores too (if not more).

I then flipped the rug (to bottom up position) by doing it half and half. I vacuumed the bottom of the rug as well. That's super fast and easy. I finally vacuumed the floor under the rug pad. that's it.

The wool felt does not shed at all.

The only issue I've found so far is that it catches white cotton lint. Needless to say my husband wears white sporty cotton socks at home, so the lint was everywhere. Now that white cotton socks are banned in the living room (!!), I think that my rug will be very happy.

To Julie - they reminds me of the caterpillars in Alice in the Wonderland too. How cute:)

Hi Susunny, it's part of the kitchen furniture and all of them have the same surface - I believe that it's just glossy paint finish. It's not glossy white, but rather with a little yellow tone - a light and warm cream color.
