Good Questions: Shelf Suggestions?

6-27--shelf.jpgHello AT,

I am looking for a sofa ledge or shelf similar to this (6 ft wide) and about 4.5 inches deep and can't seem to find it. I'd like it to be made of wood and not a black/brown (like West Elm) but a softer "truer" brown. Does anyone please have suggestions where to find something like this? I want it to span the width of our couch. I want to put art work and figures on it but don't want it to have a lip like some of the picture ledges I've seen...just a smooth narrow shelf.

Thanks so much, Ingrid

sounds like this could be a DIY moment. you could stain any lumber to the shade you need or even paint it if you want a solid colour. with a router you could plough a trough in the shelf to keep the art from sliding. if you are putting artwork on the shelf, you could use simple "L" brackets on the top of the shelf which would be hidden by the artwork later.

Bo Concept wall shelf in walnut. Use 2 and butt them up against one another to form a continuous shelf line.

I vote for DIY. This is a really simple project and if you make the ledge yourself you'll get the exact size and colour you want at an unbeatable price. Places like Home Depot can usually cut lumber to your specifications for a minimal charge. (In Canada, Home Depot gives you 4 cuts free with the purchase of the lumber and any beyond that is $1/cut.)

I vote DIY as well. Or if you have a handy friend. I just hung this weekend a 7" shelf spanning the length of my sofa. I enlisted a handy friend, paid for materials, pizza and beer, and helped out as he put it together and stained it. I love the finished product because its exactly what I wanted for much cheaper.

Well gosh, you know exactly what you want. You don't state "I cannot spend more than_________" anywhere in your post. Due to your request to find a product to buy leads me to believe you are not interested in doing this yourself...

Just pay somebody to make it. It sounds pretty simple- shouldn't cost that much.

That said, Louise's suggestion looks pretty close to your description.

best of luck

Thank you all for all your suggestions and links. I think I may have to DIM to get the right finish Chris (NYC) hit it on the mark! Having a young baby has left my DIY time limited but I really want the look of this shelf and soon. Thanks again everyone.

Habitat has several as well. Not sure if they're in the US tho (I have to drive 2 hours to Antwerp for one...)
