Good Questions: Should I Cut or Should I Go...Shopping?

2-7-crate.jpgHello AT,

I don't think I am ever going to be able to get rid of my 4-year-old
Ikea crap Beddinge sofa beds! But not from want of trying...

I ordered the Cameron sleeper sofa from Crate and Barrel after much hunting in what can only be described as the "perfect-sofa-or-death" project. They tried to deliver it this morning but it wouldn't fit in my building's narrow-low-ceiling passage. The delivery guy said nothing over 80 inches long would fit...

So now my choices are:
1. get a smaller sofa-bed; or
2. get one of those teams that can take the sofa apart and rebuild it
in my living room.

Not sure which option is better. My living space is pretty big (which
kind of reminds me of an igloo right now: large room small entry
passage - what were the builders smoking?) so I would prefer a larger
piece. But, option 2 seems like a mega project and this is a rental
apartment so when I move the break and remake happens all over again.

Thank you for letting me vent. Would love to hear your suggestions/
experience/advice.

Nisha

How about a sectional with a double wide chaise end? Small enough to fit in the apt--big enough for two people to sleep on, but uncomfortable enough that guests don't stay too long...

This happened to me last week with a sofa I had been waiting for for six weeks. Needless to say, I was not happy. I went to ABC and found a sectional, which initially I did not want, but I really didn't have much of a choice. I wanted a lot of comfortable seating and I don't think most "sofettes" are all that loungey. I think sectionals are great as long as you find the right one. Mine is slightly more modern w/ a chrome base, but it's still classic. Check out the Delancy from Crate and Barrel.

Dr. Sofa 888-837-7632. Yes, it's a couple of hundred dollars, and it will be when you leave, but if you're willing to spend the money it's worth it. They need NO notice and do a fast, great job. If you searched that long for your perfect couch, you should have it.

C&B doesn't offer a disassembly service? Why won't the thing fit. The passage is too short to turn it into your doorway? No angle would make it possible?

We recently ordered a C&B sofabed that is scheduled for delivery this Friday (in Chicago). When we placed the order we talked with George our sales guy at length about the sofa fitting up our narrow stair and front door. We ended up ordering a full size Troy sofabed- it is a custom order (8-10 weeks)-but the price is the same as the stock sofa. C&B offers some of the sofas in the full size- just ask- or check out the website. There is a small possibility a regular size (queen sofabed) Troy would have fit up our stairs, but this way we won't be sweating it out.

This almost happened to me. But I assured my couch men that whatever they had to do, if they thought they could get it in, do it. My big honkin couch scuffed the wall, but it was nothing a patch job couldn't fix. it'll be fun when I move out though.

I moved into a basement apt in Astoria last year and had to have my sofabed taken apart and reassembled. Suprisingly it was a very quick and easy process. It only took them maybe 45 mins and everything turned out great. I think the cost was around $150. That being said I have had this sofa for awhile and I think that when I move it will be staying with the apt. Hope this helps!

No useful advice on cutting the sofa in half, but just wanted to say that I also looked everywhere for a new sofa and settled on the Cameron from C&B. It just had so much of what we wanted! Anyway, I'm glad to know that it's someone else's final choice.

I bought a Cameron sofa from C&B and am so completely disappointed. First, the color was off... the swatch I picked changed in different lighting and of course, once the couch was in my house it wasn't at all what i wanted (despite repeated reassurances by the sales person). It's more of a sage green then the taupe I wanted. Then it turned out to be 5 inches shorter than advertised... but C & B claims its only 3.5 inches shorter and won't take it back. Arrrghhhh! It was an expensive mistake.

MSC,

I've been looking at the troy for some time, I'd love a review when you finally get it.

I will let you know how we like the Troy!

It sounds like you're experiencing the same problem I did moving furniture into my first apartment. I assume you're entry is off a narrow hallway with no room to make the turn into your place. I've been there, I was seconds away from turning it away when finally we got it in. Here's how we did it. Measure the height of the celing in the hallway, the sofa, from corner to corner can't be any longer than the height. Stand the sofa on end in front of the door (take off the legs if need be) grab the bottom of the sofa and start to drag the bottom end threw the door while the top end comes down. At this point it should go in smoothly. Hope this helps. If that doesn't work, get 2, 1 arm love seats and put them togeather to make a sofa.
