Good Questions: Should I Get This Platform Bed?

3-3-plush.gifHello AT,

I love the platform bed look, but have never had one before. I am afraid that I will lose all the nice bounce in my mattress and I hesitant to give up my regular bed. Are there any benefits to platforms besides just looking cool?

This is the bed I like (above)from PlushInteriors.com. It looks great and the price is right $541, but I don't know if the seller is reliable or what the quality of the bed is. Does anyone have any recommendations for a platform bed with headboard like this?

Thanks as always, CatherineF

Dear CatherineF,

We have used platform beds and boxspring beds interchangeably for years and YES you will find that platforms are firmer - not a lot, but somewhat. They are also more stable - in a nice way - since there are not all those springs bouncing around. We recommend platform beds, and you shouldn't worry as it won't totally change your experience.

As for the bed you like from Plush Interiors, it is very nice in the picture. We don't know Plush Interiors but mid five hundreds for a bedframe like this is somewhat on the low end of the middle range for price points, so don't expect the quality to be TOO high. However, for under $700 this is about as good as you can do. Jump up to $1200 and you will have a whole new range of choice.

Anyone else?

I have a Ligne Roset platform bed and find it uncomfortable. I have a bad back and think it's too firm. I've changed mattress, but still no comfort.

I have a Murphy bed, which is kind of like a platform bed, in that it has just a mattresss without a box springs. I find it to sleep just fine. But I'm really not the Princess and the Pea, though.

I've been looking at the platform beds at IKEA -- Malm or Hopen -- they're cheap and decent looking. Has anyone tried them? How's the support/stability?

I switched to a platform bed when I got a new mattress last year. The lower profile makes my small bedroom feel more roomy, and I'm happy not to have to use a bedskirt. Comfort-wise, I don't notice a difference. The only downside was that my night-table suddenly became too tall.

This is just a guess, but perhaps a tatami style bed would give you the same low profile look, but with a bit more bounce?

I have the IKEA Hopen bed and I'm quite happy with it. The support slats are adjustable a few inches up or down. I have a 5" foam mattress with a 3" memory foam topper. At the bottom setting, the top of the 5" mattress is level with the platform sides. I find it more comfortable than my girlfriend's very expensive box-spring set.

It has developed a small squeek during repetitive movement, so I may need to do some tightening. I've heard that you can use white carpenter's glue on the joints to prevent loosening. Worth a try if you are sure you'll never want to disassemble the bed ever again.

Otherwise it is a very stable bed.

My husband and I switched to a platform bed last year and love it... ours has storage underneath so we don't need a dresser in our tiny bedroom.

Debbie. I have the Malm bed (with the 2 attached side tables. Love the look and it's very solidly built. Great deal for the money.

We just got the Ikea's Malm bed and we're using it with a Tempurpedic-type mattress. I love it, and it looks a lot more expensive than it actually was -- the king-sized bed plus two bedside tables came out to like $350. You just can't beat that. Unless of course it falls apart next week. It feels solid though.

Hehe, funny that you mention that melissa. I've recently got into the memory foam craze when I bought myself a pillow and have been in love with memory foam ever since.

If you are unsure, maybe try the Blu Dot Hot Rod Bed. It can be used as a platform bed, or traditional bed. It is a nice, simple design and a good value at about $500!

There are a lot of benefits associated with platform bed other just looking cool. I hope you can find this forum useful:

Can you use a bedskirt with a platform bed and if so, how do you know what size to buy? My platform bed is a queen, and a queen bedskirt does not work. I really want to cover the bottom, so that is why the bedskirt is desirable.

CatherineF,

I apologize for the delay in responding (I'm just now finding this link).

I'm with Plush Interiors and I want to assure you we're reputable retailer with quality furnishings. We've been in business (retailing on the web) for over 10 years. We don't have the excessive mark-up found in local brick-and-mortar furniture stores. So don't let the low price convince you it's a "cheap" piece.

All of our platform beds are made of solid hardwood (which is what you need to look for in a bed) with solid wood slats used to support your mattress. Platform beds are becoming exceedingly popular as of late due to their minimalist aesthetics.

I hope this helps. If you have any questions regarding this piece or others, feel free to contact us.
