Good Questions: Should I Recover These?

10-4-maudie.jpgHello AT,

How much do you think these are worth? They're not by a name designer, but they're unique and cool. I'm trying to decide if they're worth the expense of recovering, and if I decide not to do that, how much they might be worth to a buyer/dealer.

Thanks, Maudie

Maudie, we have no idea what those would be worth to a buyer/dealer, but the pieces look like good solid stock and worth recovering if you like them. They ARE extremely unique looking. Personally, we think they'd be super nice recovered in a warm, soft twill or velvet. We would avoid large pattern and cool colors, which will clash with the warmth of the wood. If you are looking for some nice ideas, take a look at Depression Modern in SoHo and the new Restoration Hardware catalog, which has a very nice, warm neutral palette.

Maudie-- (I love that name!)
Since you yourself describe them as unique and cool, I think you have answered your own question.

I also like them, and if not going the route of SK's warm rich neutral suggestion (HEY! Hi SK!!), I could also see 'em in white leather/vinyl or an aqua boucle, since their lines are (to me) very "Dean Martin visits the Jetsons". West Elm has some similarly-shaped dining/side chairs in an aqua, I believe, to see where I'm going.

ps: If still undecided, go ahead and reupholster them, if you can afford to. I think, even if you change your mind afterward, you'd have better luck selling them reupholstered. Although pairs of chairs, in any condition, are pretty desirable to dealers/collectors/designers.

These chairs are DANGEROUSLY close to that blue one pictured in the link of ocmodern.net, except these have just a tad more of that snappy quality that p2 descibed. Still, seeing that one can give you some idea how great these might be, hunh? If you can't find a boucle' that you like, maybe a raw silk?

Thanks, re: my name. The credit goes to my parents.

This is actually a sofa and chair, not 2 chairs. "Dean Martin visits the Jetsons" is a perfect way to describe them, although they look a little more angular in photos than they do in person.

I got an estimate from The Furniture Joint of $4,000 to reupholster them. Sound reasonable to you?
