Good Questions: Should We Go For a Sectional?

4-20-section1.jpgHello AT,

I have been contemplating what kind of sofa to get once I upgrade from my IKEA sofa bed. The question is whether or not a sectional would be the answer for us. The idea would be to have the longer side under the big blue painting, not facing the TV...

We are very keen on the "libre" sectional from DWR - any thoughts on that? Any ideas or input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and thanks for that great website.

Maria, New York

p.s. We always eat dinner at the table so the dinner furniture is
there to stay.

Dear Maria,

Sectionals are not for everyone, but you seem - to us - to have a perfect situation for one. It would be a HUGE improvement over what you have now and would really round out that side of your room.

The Libre sofa is very nice. Just be sure to measure and put tape on your floor to see EXACTLY how big it will be in your space. Some sectionals are much bigger than they seem and it would ba a shame to overcrowd your main room.

Anyone else??

I agree with Maxwell to a point, I loathe sectionals but, practically speaking, if there is a good application for one this would be it. I would much rather see a beautiful sofa with wooden legs and a comfortable chair with throw pillows.

A chaise would even work nicely here, but make sure you get one facing the television though (most chaises face this way by default.)

I don't have the full Libre set -- I just have the 2-seater piece. Just want to say that I've had it for 2 years now and Libre is a good buy. It's very comfortable, the fabric wears well & is easy to clean. And as full sectionals go, it is one of the better-looking ones (I am sectional-phobic myself.)

Yes, I like the idea of a sectional. And the color that's being shown for the one you have in mind may not be the color you're thinking of but I like it for you.

But here's what I think you should do: which ever color you get, I think you should match the color up to a Benjamin Moore paint chip and then paint go to the next lightest color on the chip and paint both of those walls (at least) from the floor up to the exact midway point between the height of the sofa and the ceiling.

THEN... above that, paint the wall the next lighter color after that.

Before you paint, yank out all your nail holes where your art is now, and spackle.

Then after you've painted, I would re-hang everything within the space of that lower color, but a slightly different configuration. That will make that collection of fairly small wall items seem tighter and more focused. They're kind of lost on that wall.

Sectionals are great and can be really useful and let's face it, everyone just wants to stretch way out, and for that reason, you'll love it. I never sit on my sofa with my legs on the floor, never. But, that's me.

I agree with Curtis, but I would not be so concerned with sectioning off the paint, although it's a very smart idea too, but I absolutely would at the very least use a similar color, meaning, nearly the same, to the color of the sectional. I did that in my apartment and the sofa just blends right into the wall and the pillows pop nicely.

I don't understand the question or concern about a sectional. Am I missing something?

At any rate, (to me) the only reason to *not* do a sectional here is if you need table space in the corner. In that case, use pieces from a sectional so you have armless portions coming into a corner table.

Thanks for your comments, everyone! And thanks for voting on it. I guess we are going for the sectional ;) Most of the comments reflect the general feeling of "anti-sectionalism", which is why we have been having doubts about the setup.

Our art is definitely sort of lost on our wall and we have been thinking about painting so we will take your advice on the color (we have not yet decided on which color for the sofa). There is actually a picture rail about 1' below the ceiling so we would probably paint up to there.

The beddinge sofa has hosted many good visitors during grad school but I will be extremely happy to see it go.

Thanks,
María

What's with the obnoxious all-caps "HUGE improvement" comment, Max? Way to dis Maria's current home.
