Good Questions: Shower Door Recommendation?

2-9-showerdoor.jpgHello AT,

Can someone recommend standard-sized sliding shower doors with simple frosted glass?

Thanks, Lina

Dear Lina,

This question goes out to the crowd, to anyone who has redone their bathroom in the last few months (year) and has a good specific reference for sliding shower doors. Unfortunately, we haven't done anything like this in awhile.

Anyone??

Home Depot carries a line that's actually Kohler but branded Sterling Kincade. They make simple standard frameless glass doors and are under $300. Click my name for a link to the clear glass in my bathroom, they make frosted as well as pattered glass, and a choice of trim finishes.

Hey Peacelamp,

Surprisingly enough my bathroom is the only thing I don't have a lot of pictures of. I can post a couple tonight. Click my name for one of the sink though, I did manage to find that.

I want total frameless doors- yours have fat cheap-looking aluminium or whatever frames which will gather smut and grime easily. I want thick glass and no frame, just almost invisible, minimalist hinges, but have been told by a glass com that it will cost like 1500-2000 Dollars. Any cheaper alternatives for sleek stylke, not oldfashioned same old same old? Thanks, Coco

Hey Coco,

Good for you. Personally I don't worry about smut and grime because I keep my bathroom clean.

I think I have a crush on Joey's place.

Thanks Pipsqueak, my condo's best friend's brother's girlfriend said she heard it likes you too :)

Those pictures aren't really all that indicative of what it looks like. The colored lights really aren't that bright, just enhanced by the exposure of the camera.

"cheap-looking aluminium or whatever frames" ...
Coco, what's with the attitude?

hey joey

great looking bathroom, nice clean lines. lovely sink. and yes it looks very clean as well. i thought the sliding doors looked great even with the metal frames
if you dont mind sharing the info, did you inherit it in your loft or did you design it. if you designed it can you give a ball park figure of the costs.

I'm going to 2nd the original comment and say just go to home depot/expo center (LIC) and pick something out (and tyr ot get someone to help you)

I had no idea how many options thier were untill I saw in person. You would think frosted glass would be a simple proposition...but then you see all the options for frosted glass! I'll admit that I was a bit overwhelmed by the options.

Hey Meera,

I love talking about my place, it was a labor of love for two years. I did design everything myself. What is it that you'd like costs on? You'd be surprised just how inexpensive everything was, well most everything.

i recently had my shower doors done, semi-frameless clear glass (installed by this guy, similar to this pic: http://showerdoorking.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=26&password=&sort=1&size=medium&cat=8&page=1). it cost me ~$700-$800 and i love them!

Hey Joey, nice place. Is it in the Leather District? We also have Cubitec, which we love (I think we have 10 packs!). I was wondering if you might share more details about the Color Kinetics products you used (which, from where, how much, etc.) to light up the Cubitec shelving.

And Coco, check out the Kohler Purist series from Home Depot for about 1/3-1/4 of the prices you quote. Go to the website. Some might be tempted to tell you to put your fat cheap-looking...but I won't do that. I hope the information is helpful to you.

Thanks!

Anyone have a suggestion for a old corner tub that is open on two sides. I currently have a curtain that wraps the corner, but its too traditional for me. Really want glass but not sure how that would work with the corner involved. (click my name for a partial photo)

*sigh* DC dave, yet another picture that makes me want to gut and renovate my place.

Custom frameless glass is crazy money, and you'd lose that cool tub-open-to-the-room thing that I wish I had. What about trying to find a more modern curtain type thing?

Young-ho, actually the loft is on the Charlestown line. I'm currently lighting the cubitec with 4 c-75 fixtures, you can get them at www.wiedamark.com. I'm replacing them with one Colorcast 12 fixture. Both solutions run about $500

Joey,

Your bathroom is stunning!! Is that a soap / shampoo dispenser you have on the shower wall. If so where did you get it? Have been looking for one that does not look plastic and remind me of a gym shower.
Thanks for the advice on the curtain. Has crossed my mind, but as usual what I really want I probably can't afford. *sigh*

So, a little story behind the soap dispenser. My parents went to Miami & instead of your typical Florida souvenirs came back with things for my place (which was not finished at the time). One of the items was the soap dispenser which I loved. One night however, due to my reluctance to use the glue they provide to adhere it, it fell and broke in a zillion shampooy showergelly pieces. I was heartbroken, and struggled to find its replacement. I finally did, and found a pretty close match at Linens N Things for $40. Fearing they'd notice the slight difference, I told them what happened. They told me to return it immediately as they payed $10 for it at the JCPenney catalog outlet in Ft Lauderdale. They actually had another one sent up here, as JC Penney offered to send it US Mail, which was like $5.

All that said, Linens & Things still has the almost exact match. If you can't find it in DC I'd be glad to send one to you. Click my name & email me thru flickr.

Joey,

That story is hilarious!!
My Mom is to the point that she is afraid to buy me anything. Which is probably a good thing.

By the way thanks for the offer, but I'm going to check out the one at LNT and report back.

Joey, I LOVE YOUR PLACE!!! WOW - MUST HAVE COST A FORTUNE...

Quick Questions:

1) The drop down lighting you have everywhere - what is that called & how did you find the electrician?

2) For your fireplace, I noticed that you didn't do anything (mantle, decor). I have a similar fireplace - comes out from the wall... was thinking of doing something they do in "Divine Design" episodes all the time... Wood Shelves all the way to the ceiling w/ lights... What do you think? It might cost a fortune, though & I don't know WHERE to even find someone to do that kind of job...

Any suggestions?

Hey Mars,

Thank you for the compliment, believe it or not it didn't cost a fortunte. I was fortunate enough to buy in a building/area that at the time was under-appreciated and in 3 years has caught on like crazy.

Re: the lighting, it's all Hampton Bay flexible track lighting from Home Depot. It was about $225 per track and each came with 5 lights. I installed all of them myself.

Re: the fireplace, for the past year I've been trying to think about what to do with it. I was even thinking of submitting it to the Good Questions part of this site because I have no ideas. I'm going to try and find that Divine Design site & see her ideas.

Best place for frameless shower doors at a fraction of what some places in manhattan charges is Anthony's Custom Closets at 631-924-2200 - also from the name their custom closest are also discounted 50% from what California Closets, Aztech and Closet Therapy charges. They are located in Long Island, but have no problem coming into the city.
