Good Questions: Shower Light Suggestions?

7-11-shower.jpgHello AT,

I just signed a lease for an apartment. They just installed an enclosed shower... but forgot to put any light source! The shower is almost completely dark! I can't install any 'real' lights...but I was thinking something battery powered with and LED light? any suggestions??

Thanks, Kim

You can use a push light - they're cheap and we used them in a summer house with good results. I think the homeowner go them from Target.

I would have the landlord install a pot light with a glass or plexi cover. I've had them in the shower before and they are completely safe.

Got you covered. Click my name for a waterproof clip on battery powered LED light for only $20.

There are these lights from CB2 that are even cheaper. I have used them with great success.

Todd, how strong are those CB2 lights? I have thought about purchasing them to deal with my own relatively dark shower, but wonder if I would need so many to get any real light that it wasn't really worth it....mucho thanks if you will share your thoughts.

Lighted shower head?

I know, not any easier to install than a light, but pretty cool anyhow!

Are you in New York City area? You might try contacting the Housing authority with a question on this. It goes to habitability and is likely a code violation.

While the fixture suggested by Christy is far more elegant, consider the Shower Star: http://www.showerstar.net. The water flowing through the shower head spins a tiny turbine, which powers an LED, so no plugging in is required. They tell me that they're easy to install (haven't tried it yet myself).
And no, a dark shower is not a housing code violation.

This post reminded me of the time I lived in Switzerland during a college internship. I spent a few weeks in a charming inn at the Klosters ski resort and NEVER found the light in the shower (which was lined in teak with a solid door). I didn't ask the concierge where to turn on a light in there the first morning because I didn't want to look stupid, and I figured I would investigate the situation and find it that night. I still couldn't find it by the second morning, but by then I A) didn't want them to know I was so stupid that I showered in complete darkness twice and B) didn't want them to think that I'd gone two days without showering!

a few schools of thought...
shower with the lights on.
shower with the lights off.
the most important is choice; eyes wide open eyes wide closed. its a brain exercise.
