Good Questions: Similar Metal Apothecary Cabinet?

1-13-apothecary-cabinet.jpg
Dear AT, I am in love with this cabinet from Sundance, but the price ($995) and the shipping ($350!) are prohibitive. Any tips on how I might procure something similar for less? It has to be fully enclosed, glass and metal. Thanks in advance! - Bridget

First, don't look for a deal in the Sundance catalog! We've seen metal apothecary cabinets at flea markets and vintage stores often in the midwest. CB2 and West Elm used to carry cheaper knock-offs, too. Does anyone have a good place for Bridget to start her search?

I wonder if a kitchen cabinet manufacturer has something you could DIY?

I think the *same* item can be had for about $150 less.

I've seen this line of furniture before - I believe the manufacturer is "KNF Designs" but they hardly have a web presence. It is nice looking stuff!

Often it takes the right terms to look for on Google. If I were you I would search for:

“vintage industrial” furniture
or

“vintage metal furniture”

You best bet (if you have the time and the patience) might be Ebay

Below are a few dealers but I think they are all out of your budget. Still they might lead to better deals or other terms to look for on the web.

www.installationsantiques.com

www.americanfurnishings.com

www.sonrisafurniture.com

www.retrooffice.com

www.twentygauge.com

Good luck with that. I think it is worth the wait; it's a really beautiful piece you are looking at.

Try Boltz. They're more expensive than I would like, but not as obscene as Sundance.

That catalog was killing me -- I loved their "Draper's Cabinets" as well: http://www.sundancecatalog.com/PRODUCT/For the Home/Living/Tables %26 Cabinets/42968.html

There are some nice vintage metal cabinets in Brooklyn at the various stores on Wythe between Grand and S. 1st, and at City Foundry on Atlantic. City Foundry has a lot of inventory that isn't on the floor, so be sure to ask for more.

Sundance's Draper's Cabinets kill me as well. So beautiful! So expensively out of reach!

Bridget, vintage/antique medical and dental cabinets are trendy and therefore costly -- if fashionistas don't buy them, collectors will. Last year I spent much of my eBay time searching for these things until finally nabbing a pair for (relatively) cheap at an estate sale.

The search continues, though, because I've yet to find the perfect glass display cabinet. Barring another lucky find, I'm resigned to having to pay dearly for it. Sigh, sigh. Good luck to us both, and many thanks to everyone posting links.

All of the above stores in Brooklyn are *amazing* but you're not going to find prices that beat $995 for that cabinet at those places, sadly.

Good call on the Boltz - they seem to have a comprehensive selection of that style.

I'm feeling really lucky right now for inheriting my grandfather's vintage steel cabinet with glass doors & side panels. He was a chemist for a distilling company during much of his career and brought home a locking cabinet from the lab. (It had a broken glass panel.)

It sat in my grandparent's garage for decades, stuffed with gardening supplies. Now it's in my living room, and it looks amazing. I replaced the broken glass panel but didn't do anything to the grey painted finish. It's a little beat-up, but I like the patina and the character it brings to the room. Lucky me...

PhillyLass, Thank you. The Boltz option may be just cheap enough for me to justify buying it! AT never lets me down!
