Good Questions: Similar Queen Daybed?

6-15-green-daybed.jpg

Hi, I am searching for a nice, clean looking modern daybed that comes in a queen size. I've seen something I like, except it's from an Italian manufacturer and probably very expensive. Any creative ideas or resources to capture the same look or tips on where to buy something similar? Perhaps your readers/community might have ideas? Thanks! Nelson

I think it will prove diificult to find any daybeds as big as a queen without seriously sacrificing style or paying for an expensive European design — can readers prove me wrong on this?

One suggestion that might work for you is CB2's Lubi Daybed (which flips to make a queen-sized mattress!)

Anyone else?

If you want a queen sized daybed and you don't want to order something very expensive, you'd be better off to try building a frame yourself. Daybeds are more common in twin since it's supposed to be used as a couch during the day - a queen bed kinda defeats the purpose.

If I wanted to do it on the cheap, I'd probably toss a king sized blanket over it to cover most of it, push it into a corner, have five or six large pillows/cushions for the back and more pillows in front of those to try to make it comfortable.

If you want the above in a queen, the easiest and by far least expensive might be a DIY project, starting with a queen mattress and box spring on a Hollywood frame. The frame should have holes in it that can be used to bolt head and foot boards on, and those could be made of simple plywood or mdf sheet, with matching bolt holes drilled into it, and padded fabric staple-gunned to it. I would make a fitted slip cover for each head/foot board to slip on after it is attached and snaps onto the stapled padding under the box spring, and then simply make the cover, and bolsters out of matching fabric.

My wife and I wanted something very close to what you are looking for. We have a small loft and wanted a place for guest to sleep when they came to visit. So we got the Lubi day bed from CB2. For the price, size, style, and comfort we couldn't find anything better.

As AT said most day beds come in twin only, but if you used a standard metal frame and attached 2 footboards, you'd make your own large scale day bed. Footboards are generally lower than headboards. Good Luck!

I thought the whole point of a "daybed" is that it functions as a sofa during the day? Having one as large as a queen-size bed sort of defeats the purpose, in my mind.

Hi,

I design affordable custom upholstered pieces and recently made a daybed similar to the Lubi for a client looking for something in white leather with a tufted top like the Barcelona Chair.

A nice solution may be a piece like the Lubi in its function but with arms on each side. I would be able to make something for you in the fabric of your choice and much better quality.

I would love to talk to you more about your request and show you some options.

I love the daybed pictured, do you know who makes it?

Thanks!

Ballard Designs has a Louisa Bed that is similar to the one you show, and it comes in all sizes except Cal King.

thanks everyone for the useful comments.

Crowedj, the manufacturer of the daybed I posted is the Duetto Daybed...it is the "Flou" series, I believe. Price tag is $7600-$13000 USD, according to one source I read.

Ulrika, I think you're right that it may have to be a DIY project. Thanks for the info.

As for the point of a "Queen daybed"...we have an L-shaped studio, but a good friend and interior designer came by and suggested moving the bed into the area where we have a living room to open up the space. Sure enough, it looked much more spacious and flowed better. His reasoning was, "why pretend that the bed isn't there? You can't ignore it in a studio, so make it a nicer bed, dress it up and serve as additional seating.

Love the Lubi, but since it's our primary bed, we need it for full-time use. Will check out Ballard Designs, as per chincacapri.

Any additional thoughts on resources/where to get the right frames/footboards to recreate something similar would be really helpful, and any other hints or tips to make it look as polished as possible.

Thanks all!

I love the idea of this Ikea daybed - http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30080316 - it has drawers for storage, and it pulls out to become a bigger bed. I'd like something like that for my office/spare bedroom, but I don't like the style of it.

You can Google the instructions and an idea of how to DIY if you're interested.

could you buy 2 upholstered headboards or slipcovered from say Target or pottery barn and place at the head and foot of the bed. We have tried this with smaller beds with some success. Then lovely linens to finish it nicely.

thanks for the info on the pic. Love it but out of my budget.

NelsonNYC -- This idea isn't original to me, so not taking credit since it was posted here once - I just can't find it.

What about using two twin beds and making them a sectional sofa during the day? You'd get a king bed at night. You would have to rearrange a little at night, but it might be worth the effort.

I am buying a 1bd/1ba 532 sq ft house. My 2 children will share the bedroom and I am taking my queen bed to use as a daybed in the main room.I have a nice sleeper sofa but am selling it as I have a bad back and comfort is most important to me.Nelsonnyc I plan on getting extra firm bolster back pillows from jcpennys which ou can get in a variety of covers. Then getting a bed cover and adding extra large silk and nubby style pillows.Im considering 2 footboards also so I have arm rests but am afraid it would look to bulky.1option I am considering is some sort of platforn queen bed without head or footboard and built in storage drawers or baskets underneath.Using pottery barn stratton bed as an example but in queen size.Good luck and hope these siggestions inspire.
