Good Questions: Slim King Beds?

2005_1_3_question mark.jpgHello AT,

I have a kingsize mattress and frame in a very small room. It is pushed up under the windows, because that is the only way it'll fit. I'm desperate for a bed to fit the frame, or at the very least a headboard.

I don't want it to be too high and cover up a big part of the windows; it needs to have quite simple lines because the rest of the furniture in the room does as well...and it shouldn't break the bank. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Barbara

It is your call as to style and price point, but we can suggest a few good places to look for simple bedframes that won't take up any extra space:

As for headboards, they are usually quite TALL, but you could look at West Elm's seperate headboards, which you could mount low down on the floor.

If none of this appeals to you, the CHEAPEST way to skin this cat (and one that we like) is to stick with your metal bedframe and invest in 1. bedskirt 2. heavy rubber cups for the feet (to keep it still) and 3. big king-size pillows that will create a cushy-cushy backrest behind your normal pillows. (Thanks, Barbara!) MGR

My bed is also in an awkward corner, and I can't have a traditional headboard because it would block the fire escape. I've thought about making a padded backrest for the side of my bed. I haven't figured out quite how to make it, but I do have an old hollow core closet door and can get padding at those foam stores on canal... Any suggestions?

I covet the slim and sexy Alu Bed from DWR, lack of headboard notwithstanding. It takes up no extra room at all, and has plenty of space underneath for storage. Maybe, some day!

I just got the Alu bed with the Sonno mattress and it is great. Sturdy and it has a middle rail and fifth leg to avoid cracked and sagging slats. Right now I am leaving underneath open to show off the lines of the bedframe, but you can add a boxspring and bedskirt if you want to put stuff underneath. I just use big Euro shams instead of a padded headboard. Looks great!

I know you're looking for something not to cover the windows, but I just wanted to throw this suggestion out there for other people who might have a headboard dilemma. What we did with my sister's queen-sized bed was used a decorative screen as the headboard. She left the regular metal bed frame and had her comfy down feather blanket (large enough to cover all sides) and we set my black lacquered & gold Chinese screen at the head of the bed. It did push the bed away from the wall some because we set up the screen regularly (not flat against the wall), but that just made it all the more interesting. Pillows completed the look, and overall it was really pretty.

What do you mean by "heavy rubber cups for the feet"? Is this a repurposed sort of object, in the miscellaneous section of the hardware store? I did a fast look, because my bed keeps scooting all over my sloping floor, and couldn't find anything that seemed to work.
