Dear AT,
I loved the idea of a stylish small refrigerator with a freezer on the bottom like the one Grace mentioned in the NYT audio story. Did anyone catch the brand though -- it sounded like "Lieber," but I haven't been able to find any company even close. Any suggestions?
J. Rogers
We looked too and also came up with nothing for Lieber. If Grace is reading this, perhaps she'll solve the mystery. In the meantime,
here are a ton of bottom freezer types to look at,
many of which are "European" in terms of keeping to a more svelte size.
(Thanks, J.!) MGR

Yes. Liebherr. Their ad is in January 2005 Architectural Digest on Page 85 and it features the 30" bottom freezer/refrigerator. Is this product placement? Is Apartment Therapy another SpiderMan movie?
Are the Bosch Compact Refrigerator available in the U.S.?
Is it possiable to convert them...Is it worth it?
I loved the retro model Bosch KDL19465 Compact Refrigerator.
I've had an Amica for 2+ years that I love-- nice European design (functionally and aesthetically), quiet, energy efficient.
The one refrigerator brand I can think of that sounds like Lieber is LIEBHERR, which is beyond any doubt the best European (German) refrigerator brand. They only make fridges, coolers, freezers etc. as far as home appliances are concerned(they also make building equipment). Miele fridges are also manufactured by Liebherr.
LG makes one, for about $600
I've had a Conserv bottom-freezer frig for a few years now. It's great. Low energy consumption, and low noise. The shape makes it quite good for a smaller kitchen. It's very tall (79") and narrow (24"), and the same depth as your typical counter (24"). It also look very cool, especially in SS. It's now marketed in the US by Equator, but I believe it is still made in Denmark by Vestfrost.
try www.compactappliance.com - I just did a quick check and saw one "Apartment Refrigerator" with a bottom freezer
they have tons of other appliances sized just right for nyc apartments as well
Speaking of retro, Smeg offers a pretty neat and small single door model (there's a freezer somewhere inside; I don't know if it's on the top or bottom); again, though, not sure if it's available stateside. I've been looking for an undercounter solution myself since being inspired by the G-R's apartment slideshow at nytimes. Looking for something with a small freezer component (I need Haagen-Dazs) that will work better than the crap units we all used back in college. Any advice out there?
I just bought a Whirlpool (black and stainless steel) at Sears. They told me that it is a quiet refrigerator, but it isn't.I have an open kitchen and theloud noise of the fan drives us crazy.I miss my 1960s avocado-colored GE. That one was 25" deep and 30" wide and quiet.
I was waiting for new colors to come out so I put it off to replace my 1960 GE fridge with something else than white, black, bisque or stainless steel.Last Sunday the "old" fridge took its last breath and I had to replace it quickly. But what a dissapointment the noisy Whirlpool is. I don't know, if Sears will take the Whirlpool back, but we have to get rid of the $665.oo Whirlpool. The space for a fridge is limited. Can anyone give me advice.I need a quiet fridge, not wider than 32",not deeper than 28-30",and not taller than 70". I would be really thankful for any advice.
Thank you so much in advance!
what was the answer to Heide's question? I have the same question
To Vera and Heide,
Check out elmirastoveworks.com and go to their Northstar appliances. Very cool, very retro, and very 50's (or 60's!). But not cheap...
Also check out heartlandapp.com, their Legacy and Metro series of appliances.
PS: we are dealer for both. Reply if you want info.
WE purchased Liebherr 24X24X79 from canadien company Euro-Line Appliances in 2002, came to the house by truck, I beleive, we paid about 2000$ including delivery. Very quiet, I have an open/kitchen/dining/living room, hardly can hear anything. The company was very customer oriented, 1st fridge has a slight dent, about an inch, I intended to keep it anyway, because it goes inside the cabinet, could not be seen at all.My husband wanted new one, because of the price. They sent us a new one. My husband, who is 6'6" loves this fridge, me too. Highly recommended, they make 30" wide too, or you can put 2 24 inch side by side, manual will show you how.
Buy Liebherr by all means if you like to eat fresh: 3 drawers in freezer organise food better than my previous 20 cubic feet Kenmore with 6ft frezer. I keep frosen veggies in 1 drawer, prepapred food in the second and meat in the third. Plenty of space for food in the fridge, highly visible. Do not buy or buy 2 fridges (see my first comment re side by side), if you eat a lot of junk, pre-packaged food in large boxes, like pizza, warehouse size entrees and so forth..
I loved to see the expression on my electrician's face( I run an electrical outlet for a fridge, while re-doing kitchen), regarding th electricity consumption- same as 1 bulb in a month!!!
Liebherr sells a 30" wide refrigerator with freezer on bottom that's counter-depth (about 25") and super tall (81").
It's pricey ($3699!), but here's a link that might get you where you want to go:

Good luck!
