Good Questions: Small Undercounter Pull Out Trash Bin?

10-12-under.jpgHello AT,

I need help with finding an under-sink pull out double waste bin (one for trash, the other for recyclables). I'm looking for one that can mount to the floor of the base cabinet. I've been having difficulty thus far as all the brands I've encountered are too wide, too tall and/or too deep to accomodate A. the sink plumbing in this base cabinet and B. my tiny NYC kitchen.

I've checked out the following brands, thus far, to no avail: Hafele, Hailo, Amerock, Rev-a-shelf, Simple Human and Real Solutions... Please help.

Best, Adrienne

Dear Adrienne, we don't use a pull out solution, but we have had trouble looking for small trash cans in the past and have always resorted to the classic Rubbermaid open top style wastebasket that can you can do anything with. Without knowing how wide your cabinet is, you may have to resort to a custom solution by purchasing a slide out caddy like this one, cutting it down and attaching to it the thinnest or lowest bin you can find.

We also found this one from Stacks and Stacks which might work. (Pic above)

And this one that rolls out the other way and might create a solution.

There is something called the Rack Sack which mounts to the inside of the cabinet door and has a lid - and the best thing about it is that you can use grocery bags with it. We had one in my old apt. and then switched to the Magikan, which I do like, but I'm thinking about going back to the Rack Sack b/c I like the garbage out of site. I think they sell it on organizeeverything.com.

We purchased this "Under-the-Cabinet Chrome Pull-Out Trash Bin"
http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=12988923

But it's a piece of junk and we pulled it out in fustration and just use the bin on the floor.

I'm almost positive I got mine from Ikea, a few years back. Ask someone in the kitchen section. Mine is working perfectly, I love it.

if the cabinets are of relatively-recent vintage, check out the manufacturer at a kitchen design store, Home Depot, etc. most make pull-outs, etc. specifically for their cabinets

At the Container Store, I bought a mid-size Simple Human round can with step-on lid opener. It has a plastic liner with handle, and the lid is flat, which, as Martha Stewart advised, is de rigeur in a busy kitchen. This can is light, well sized, and best of all the Container Store takes the guesswork out of bag/liner sizing: they sell the bags for a reasonable price. I love these things. Now, you asked for a nail-to-the-floor thing. I am only suggesting this closed-lid one that is stationery bec. putting anything under my sink is an invitation to unwanted critters.

I found Rack Sacks on the organizeeverything by doing a search:

http://organizeeverything.resultspage.com/search?p=Q&ts=custom&w=sack&go=Search&catalog=organizeeverything1

The Container Store also carries Rack Sacks and has a broader selection; their prices and shipping/handling fees may be better as well. (I haven't checked that out.)

I'm a big fan of the Rack Sack. I love having trash out of view and this is a great way to reuse those grocery sacks!

I had a similar problem, and had to find one that was slid wide-side to the front. I looked at Simple Human, and Elfa which were both orientated the narrow side to the front, then found a no-name version at The Container Store. It only needs about 15 inches in depth, I think. It isn't as well constructed as those other two, plus I added a plastic bin into it, but it is working well.

I used to have a pull-out wastecan and LOVED it. My new place can't accomodate one in the cabinets anymore. Had the exact same problems you had.

My compromise is a smaller lidded trashcan that I store in the cabinet. When I cook and have generate lots of refuse, I pull it out of the cabinet. But mostly it stays in the cabinet in the course of daily living.

I may have the same problem you do. not enough depth because of the plumbing. check out this side-ways pullo out:

good luck!

I got a small, 10-gallon Magikan from a friend when I was having space issues in my small West Village apt. It's my garbage and laundry hamper... Try that perhaps:

the bags that I was used to purchasing from Rack Sack , 5 gal 4 rolls with 30 on a roll, are now discontinued and I cannot find them anywhere. If anyone knows of a location, please email me at: fruitflies1@bellsouth.net. The new bags are not working out at all, and I just dont understand why it was necessary to change something that worked well!!!!!

I need a really really narrow width. (7/1/2 inches.) Is that possible to find? As stated above , due to the stupidity of the plumber he has made it almost impossible , if not impossible to find a pull out feature for us.
Please let me know if anyone knows where I can find that dificult size.
Thanks,
Gail

Info for Jerry and anyone else using the Rack Sack "old style" bags on rolls. On Amazon.com they have the new 3-5 gal. non-roll bags for sale now. The interesting part is in the reviews - someone called up the manufacturer and found that they will be starting to sell the roll-type unscented bags again next month (November 06), due to customer demand. There is light at the end of the tunnel!

If you find ones that are designed to mount to the side you can just use L brackets to attach them to the bottom of the sink cabinet. Presto! Bottom mount.
