Good Questions: Sofa Fix In My Home?

2004_8_10_upholsterer3.gif"Hello AT,

I have a very nice modern Knoll sofa. It is a full size three seater sofa in a tweed fabric. The stitching has torn along one of the arms. I live in a fifth floor walk up so it is hard to send out to fix. Do you know of anyone specializing in this type of stitching repair for either upholstery or vintage modern furniture that can come to the location of the sofa to fix it??

Thanks, Michael"

Dear Michael, It is possible to repair some upholstery damage within your apartment. However, in order to figure out whether it can be repaired on site, you need to have an upholsterer come in and look at it. We often work with Lore Decorators and spoke with them about this. They give free estimates and would be willing to come by and take a look. We would recommend giving them a call or doing the same with an upholsterer near you - depending on where you live. If it's fixable, they'll do it right there.

It's standard practice for the upholsterer to come to you - they don't want to move (and make room for) your couch any more than you do. If you make a few calls, you'll find someone who will at least come for the estimate and who will most likely fix it onsite if possible.

If you're having trouble finding someone that way, try taking a digital picture of the damage from several angles & with closeups. (Be sure to also get a few pics of the whole piece and use good lighting.) Then you can bring the pictures when you go to talk to different companies.

When did Elvis Costello start reupholstering sofas?

This is an easy question. Call Dr. Sofa at (718) 292-6300. I bought a sofa from Room & Board that was too big to get up the stairs, so these guys came in a van, took it apart from the back, moved it upstairs, and put it back together again in 90 minutes, and it looks and feels like they never touched it. If they can do that, they can fix yours. Some of them are trained as upholsterers, so sewing on the spot is their thing.
