Hello AT,
I'm the guy who had his sofa butchered by New York Couch Doctor (grrr) to get it into his apartment.
After I've eventually moved out of my current place, I'd like to get a top notch furniture restorer/upholsterer to fix the wood frame and the leather upholstery and padding, once and for all (and never have to cut my sofa open again). Here is my sofa, it's an Anthropologie cotswold cottage leather sofa.
I know New York must be full of extremely meticulous furniture craftsmen. Any suggestions? Thanks, Jonathan

I used Lore recently (from the AT list) -- they were excellent! Not sure if they handle leather, however, but can't hurt to ask.
Hi,
Yes indeed, it was Sal, the "New York Couch Doctor". He was recommended by ABC(!) along with MJS. Also looked into Dr. Sofa and Z Bros...
So I did my homework, but unfortunately I just made the wrong choice.
For the record, the couch is structurally sound, it's just that Sal made some alterations to a couple of pieces of leather trim (read: cut them off) because he didn't tuck them in before reattaching the back. Didn't even ask me, though I was standing there watching him!
Still ticks me off.
I have read good things about Rosini & Sons. Anyone?

Thanks for all your suggestions.

Oh, I've always admired that sofa. What a shame. No useful advice, but I hope you can get it properly fixed after you move.
I saw that Frank recommended Lore and I must disagree with him on that. I used them to redo a sofa in ultrasuede. They took forever (4-5months?), mismatched colors (horribly), didn't return phone calls (I had to trick them into thinking it was someone else to get them on the phone) and left the fabric loose in places. I complained about them to BBB and the credit card company refunded my money. I had to have someone else redo the work. Unfortuately, I can't give you that person, because it was done by someone that generally doesn't do this type of work.
I was quoted recently by Dune in Tribeca to recover two chairs, purchased elsewhere, in leather. I haven't done it yet, but the price seems reasonable and I do trust them. The furniture in their showroom attests to the quality of the work. Good Luck!
Lore Decorators indeed is horrible. Forget the lead time. They're ridiculous about that. You have to BEG them to give you their stuff.
I would pass on them.

I came across this site because I myself am looking for sofa repair work, then saw that a few people suggested Dr. Sofa. I just got off the phone with some rather rude workers of theirs and completely refuse doing business with them. They just no-showed on a second appointment at the last minute. The first appointment was changed because of a "heavy work-load" and was rescheduled for this morning, "the first appointment of the day, between 8:00 and 9:00 AM". Well, they left me a message on my phone at 9:30 AM saying they needed to reschedule for later in the day and call them back. I called and they told me someone would be here by 4:00 PM, which was inconvenient since I had other appointments that now had to be rescheduled. 5:00 PM rolls around and not only has no one come to repair my sofa, they hadn't even called. I had to call them to find out what was goin on, which alone is unacceptable. After being transferred through two rude workers, I spoke to a man who told me that they were "too busy and that it wasnt worth their while to drive out to queens" (although their website says that they serve the queens area) and that " I could reshcedule" Reschedule? For what? They hadn't showed up twice and now they've insulted me, stating that my business wasn't worth the effort. I would NEVER suggest that ANYONE use these people. They are unprofessional, unreliable, and undeserving of an honest persons business. Do yourself a favor, and keep searching, as I will.
Prior to finding this site, I had called ABC Carpet and Home (where I bought my large 93" slipcovered Mitchell Gold couch) to see if they knew of a service that could take my couch apart to fit down my narrow and angled basement stairs. Yesterday, I wasn't even sure such a company existed. I was referred to The New York Couch Doctor on Long Island.
I called yesterday and they had availability to come to my home in Brooklyn today at 9am. It was perfect. Later on last night, because I realized I knew nothing about the service, I googled the company and came upon this email thread.
It gave me pause for a second when I read the comments here (I did not know there were so many other companies out there to try) but I trust ABC Carpet and went ahead with my appointment. I wanted the couch in the basement and I was eager to have it done that morning.
So ... I'm now compelled to add my comments about Sal, the New York Couch Doctor. First of all, the office staff was efficient and got back to me immediately in regards to setting up the early morning appointment. They made every effort to accomodate me. This morning, Sal and his assistant were on time. They were courteous, professional, quick and pleasant. They were able to disassembled the back of my couch and reassemble it in the basement in one hour and 20 minutes.
I was told, depending on the scope of the project, the cost would be between $250 and $350. It wound up costing $325. I know there are other quotes out there that are for $225, however, I have to say to be able to call a company and have them come first thing in the morning is better than waiting 5 months for an appt with a less expensive company.
My couch was about $2000 so this fee was okay overall. It is an extremely comfortable and very deep couch and I did not want to get rid of it.
After the back was reassembled, it was still very structurally sound. In fact it felt the exact same way as it did before, perhaps even stronger. My husband and I are COMPLETELY satisfied with the service that Sal, The New York Couch doctor provided.
I would use him again and highly recommend him to anyone who wants professional couch assembly done in a timely manner.
Now, if anyone knows of a company that can dye my denim slipcover so it looks like new again, I'd greatly appreciate it!
Hi, The quotes I'm getting for reupholstering a sofa are upward of $1400 (more depending on fabric). One place told me to look for an upholster, who will upholster the new fabric over the top of the old fabric, which costs less. Does anyone know who does that and what a reasonable price is? I'm thinking I might as well get a brand new sofa for 2-3k. What if I pay 2k for reupholster and it comes out bad? Also, it is a cream colored sofa---is it possible to dye to burnt orange? Thanks!
hi,
Re-upholstery cost so much because of the amount of fabric it takes to cover a peice of furniture (a six foot couch takes about 20 yards) and the labor. Most upholstery fabric costs anywhere from 30 dollars (which is rather cheap) to 500 dollars a yard. It also takes at least 40 hours of labor to cover the couch. So if one was to buy thirty dollar a yard fabric to upholster their 6 foot couch and then pay the upholsterer 10 dollars an hour (which is a rediculously little amount) to do it, the thousand dollar mark has allready been hit. As far as dying a couch, for dye to take evenly on a surface, that surface has to be entirely submerged. A pool might work for this, however an incredibly lethal amount of dye would have to be used. A tye dye effect might be achieved by applying the dye with a sqirt bottle, however, it would be very hard to rinse, which is a crucial step in avoiding the transfer of the dye to clothing. Another thing to consider is the type of fabric to be dyed. Most synthetic fibers i.e. polyester, are colored while the fibers are being made, and resist dying afterwards. Most upholstery fabrics are synthetic/synthetic blends because it makes them more durable. Might be cheaper to by a new couch.

Hello. My name is Christopher Purnell, and i'm the owner of EZ Furniture and Fitness Equipment Assembly. We are Nyc's expert in RTA furniture assembly & installation. Over the years we have seen some very bad butcher jobs on sofa dis-assembly. However, it never amazes me to see how many people actually accept this kind of work, and are actually thankful that the sofa is even in their nest. I strongly disagree, and believe that there are more than enough professional upholstering companies and sofa disassembly services that will allow everyone to make a decision based on others experiences and referalls. Ask what associations they belong to, what seperates them from other services, references. Our company for example is a member of the "National Professional Assemblers Association", all of our technicians are required to have a minimum of 5 years experience as well as participate in continuing education or workshops related to our services. It is things like this that sets apart the weeds from the flowers. So, remember EZ Furniture Assembly for all your Furniture and Fitness Equipment Assembly services.
I just want you all to know, that I used Sal - "The New York Couch Doctor" Furniture Service and I have nothing but good feedback to give. He was recommended to me by ABC Home also along with MJS and as it stands, I made the right decision. Not only was he professional but he was meticulous as well. I never thought my sofa would fit into my NYC apartment, but he works wonders! He's got it all down to a science. He's highly recommended in my book. Great Work Sal!!!! Thanks again... :-)
Does anyone know how to get in touch with MJS?
Nesco Upholstery has a Free online upholstery quote form on their that lets you include a picture of your furniture . They did a great job on my sofa when my movers just threw my sofa onto the ground and tore the entire arms and part of the back off it.
Their upholstery work was fantastic and they even came to my house with the new fabrics to choose from.
Highly recommended!
