Good Questions: Sofabed Like The Petrie?

6-19-petrie-sofa.jpgHello AT,

I love the tufted back of the Petrie sofa from Crate and Barrel. However, living in a one bedroom neccessitates a sofabed for overnight guests. Is there a sofabaed out there with a tufted back like the Petrie?

Thanks, Michelle

I don't know of a tufted sofa bed, but I also live in a one bedroom and I have the petrie sofa. We have an aero bed for guests. We tought about getting a sofa bed instead but decided that for the money you invest in a nice sofa it ought to be the one that you really want.

i want to also chime in that i have the petrie sofa and i live in a one bedroom. honestly - when i have one guest over, that one person can sleep very comfortably on the sofa! i also have the ottoman, so i push that against the sofa if he/she wants to stretch his/her arm/leg out.

i also don't know if splurging on aerobed is worth it for me since i rarely have more than 1

If you primarily want the tufted back, I'm sure you can customize a sleeper at Carlyle Sofa (www.carlylesofa.com) to add this. However, one of the big appeals the Petrie has for me is its wooden legs which give it a nice, airy, midcentury feeling; a sleeper sofa will need to be much thicker/lower to the ground to make room for the mattress.

Get the sofa you want and buy an aerobed for guests. Sleeper sofas are more expensive, heavier, more cumbersome to move (when you switch apts) and no more comfortable than an aerobed. Carlyle will customize a sofa, but I think they're pricey. Love the tufted back!

Carlyle Sofa, may be on the pricey side of things but they do have sales. I have one of their sleeper sofas and it is as comfortable to sleep on as any standard mattress. The sofa is as solid as a rock. Their customer service is excellent. Delivered on the date and TIME promised. Mason

I love that sofa too. But I am looking for a small, L shaped sectional. Has anyone ever seen a sectional or L shaped couch in a similar style?

I think the Jane Sofa and Spencer Sofa from Gus* Modern is a sofa bed.

Hey X,

Gus* Modern has a lot of great L Shaped Modern Sectionals. The Carter Sectional, The Clinton, and The Club Sectional.

Or Bobby Berk Home has some great modern sectionals as well. The York Sectional, Apex, Daphine, Bushan and Curve Sectional.

Michelle, yes I have seem some with a quilted back. I can NOT vouch for the durability or quality and they certainly arent as nice as the Petrie but here they are:

1. Convert a Couch http://www.handy-living.com/products/convert-a-couch/index.html
Rockaway Bedding carries one of these sofabeds so you can try it out there.

2. Lofa Sofa http://www.lofasofa.com/showroom.htm
Internet order from Canada

3. Sausolito Sofa bed at http://www.affordable-beds.com/sausalito_sofa_bed.htm You can find this at a few of the futon stores in NY

By the way I have just finished an exhaustive sofa bed search. In the end I decided to just buy a couch which I plan on having a few year and an aerobed. Maybe one day I hope to trade up for a wonderful sofabed by AU.

I am also a 1-bedroom apartment dweller. The boyfriend and I had this same dilemma when we were looking for the perfect sofa. My advice:

1. Buy the sofa you are in love with and get an airbed for guests. You'll be glad you did.

2. Sofa sleepers are NEVER comfortable. Your guests will be much happier on an air bed.

We bought the sofa of our dreams (Andre from Room & Board) and have never regretted it.

go to www.stylussofas.com, under contemporary sofas there's a piece called the Haro- it's tufted back available as a sofabed ( Q D or Single)-it's filled in at the bottom more then the one from C&B but you need that for a sofabed
It can be ordered through me at yaletownsofa in Vancouver;
yaletownsofagranville@gmail.com- lots of fabric options unfortunately not on line but...
also check my own Haro Sofabed in the coolest smallest apt contest under Brian and Luke's Postwar Paradise

you could just get this couch, it's wide enough for one person to sleep on. unfortunately, it's hideously expensive - but one of my favorite couches ever. 'tufty time' from b&b italia. i recently did a test-sit on one, and it is amazing.

I find my sofabed both comfortable to sit on and to sleep on, it's nice to offer an actual mattress off of the floor for guests to sleep on, especially my parents/inlaws-who would not appreciate sleeping on an air mattress on the floor!
The trick is to remember that sofabeds can be a bit firmer because of a lack of springs in the base ( where the bed goes) so get a softer foam seat cushion to compensate unless you like a firm seat ( I know I do wink wink...)sorry...

Speaking of sofas, does anyone know a good place to get sofa seat cushions dry cleaned? I have a Crate and Barrel sofa with a small chocolate stain and the recommendations say no water should be used... Thank you.
