Good Questions: Sofas with Character?

10-21-chesterfield.jpgHello! I am recently single and desperately attempting to find the "perfect" sofa for my new ridiculously expensive alcove studio apartment in a typical cookie cutter luxury building. My immediate taste is modern, but I'm trying to get out of my box and get something with more character. I found a perfect chesterfield sofa at Anthropologie — but its $3k and I didn't want to spend that much — ESPECIALLY on a sofa from there. Does anyone know of any deals or vintage sofa's like this to recommend???

search "tufted" and "chesterfield" on craigslist and you will eventually hit one. I just saw a black mohair go on auction out in Long Island - $800. It was gorgeous!

I would definitely check craigslist. If you want something, CB2's Chet sofa has the roll arms and tufts of a chesterfield but is modern. Spruce it up with some Anthro like pillows and you will be good to go.

Also...

Granny's Attic out in NJ has a brown leather set (I was there 2 weeks ago). I once bought a pink mohair chesterfield from them for $250. I think I got lucky though, their prices can be a bit...much.

Estate sales. You may not want to do the work, but there's a certain satisfaction in finding something perfect for your space. I have found some incredible pieces of furniture at estate sales and antique stores.... for under $500.

I would try JC Penny (yes I know, but they have neat furniture sometimes.) Also, I'd try Horchow.

I saw one a couple of years ago on JC Penney.
Try PB teen too - they've had nice chairs in the past

Crate and Barrel's Azure sofa is a modern take on the chesterfield and comes in a variety of colors. Good luck!
