Good Questions: Source for Sailcloth Cushions?

5-14-sailcloth-cushions.jpg

I am looking for a source to buy (or to make) oversized pillows, slightly over a meter square, of nautical quality sail cloth for use on an outdoor patio as a chill-out area. I have seen this sort of thing in Turkey and really liked the idea but haven't had much luck finding sources in the US or Europe. Ideas anyone?

What a fun idea — anyone?

Try a few of the online outdoor fabric stores:

At Joann's fabrics I saw that they sold sailcloth in many different colors. And they also have outdoor fabric that's patterned. And I would just go online and buy beanbag stuffing in bulk.

More importantly, where did you go sailing in Turkey? On a gulet, I assume? I'm looking at a gulet trip for this September and wondering where you went and how you liked it.

I second Seattle Fabrics. If they don't have the fabric, they'll know who does.

There are several marine / boating supply companies that offer bean bags that look very similar. They are made for boating and do not absorb water, are very comfortable, stable in ruff seas and some prefer them over any other type of boat seating. Here is one that is popular: http://www.e-searider.com/.

Another option would be to contact a local sailing/yacht club. Sailors tend to replace their sails pretty regularly and you could probably offer to take/buy an old sail to use. I have a small backpack made by a company called NautiGirl that re-uses racing sails for messenger bags & backpacks. Otherwise, this link is for a list of sail makers in the New England area - I would think that if you called them to inquire about fabric they could either sell it to you or refer you to a fabric manufacturer.

When I was in Turkey (Palamutbuku), these were inflated plastic pillows covered by a canvas pillow case. They were about 3 feet square and they were terrific.

These are very common on Greek and Turkish beaches

for outdoor use, get something that'll hold up to the sun and weather, otherwise it will fade in two seconds flat. "Sunbrella" is the major brand, but there are many others that do the same thing. Just google and you'll find tons.

Have them made by a boat upholsterer. I'm currently working on a similar project in Seattle- I enlisted the help of "All Aboard," and they've been great.

The hardest part is picking out the fabric- Sunbrella comes in so many colors and patterns, it's overwhelming!

Those cushions aren't "sailcloth" they're a fabric called "Sunbrella" or a knock-off of Sunbrella. Sailcloth (Dacron) is brittle and would make a uncomfortable cushion.

Google "sunbrella cushions" to see if you can find something off-the-rack. If you live in an area where people have boats, look in your yellow pages for a custom canvas shop.

If you google "outdoor beanbag" you will get a ton of options.

These look pretty much exactly like the ones you referenced but they are pretty pricy

I had made two of these out of old canvas mail bags. They end up at about the size you want. Probably you could be able to get them from your local post office. Since they have a square bottom, you just remove it and attach a zipper on one side and saw the other. I had my father's upholsterer do that for me. Just stuff is with cheap foam stuffed pillows, (i used four somewhat small ones, just for thickness and stiffness) The beige color is timeless and their natural wear and stains give them character and give you a story to tell. They are by design able to withstand anything.

I second (third, fourth?) the "Sunbrella" option. The fabric won't fade. Ever. And you can clean it with a 90%water/10%bleach solution really easily. There are tons of fabric color/pattern options. It is often less expensive to buy the fabric and have a cushion made than to go with the major retailers of Sunbrella (like Restoration Hardware outdoor).

Navigate Sunbrella.com to see fabric and find retailers near to you. Good luck!

I currently work for a marine canvas company in Toronto Canada. we make pillows like this all the time! many canvas shops should be able to make them for you. i suggest checking out the marine fabricators association web page to find a canvas shop near you. i would make sure to have them made from Sunbrella brand fabric with a good mildew resistant fiber fill inside. this way you wont have to worry about them being rained on. if you cant find a shop near you contact my shop and we'll ship them to you!
Good luck with the hunt!

Thanks to you all for your assistance and comments. This has been most helpful.

Matilde: the gulet trip I took sailed around the underwater ruins in Kekova in the southern region of Antalya, not far from Kas. I can certainly recommend staying in Kas as it is laid back and does not have the high pressure touts like in the larger cities.

SAILCLOTH CUSHIONS -
If you are looking for something with a more than a hint of authenticity then try - www.mfv53.com... they make fantastic cushions using vintage cotton sails dating from the 1950's... they also make cushions from antique linens, we have several on our boat.
