Good Questions: Sources for Modern Tile?

11-17-tile-modern.jpghi- i've been searching for tiles for my kitchen backsplash. i found angela adams tiles at ann sacks that i like a lot, but they're really expensive. (the ones on the left with the square pattern are over $200 sq./ft.) i thought i'd put it out there and see if anyone knows any less expensive (not cheap) colorful modern graphic tiles out there? thanks, jim

We're big believers that really simple tile (like Subway tile and 1" mosaic tile) can be the most timeless, modern option available (and a lot cheaper too!). Does anyone else have suggestions for Jim?

Check out the tile at Heath Ceramics (http://www.heathceramics.com/heath/). This is gorgeous tile practically handmade in a small factory in Sausalito, California. There are some wonderful timeless designs and the quality is superb. They are not cheap but there's a 20% discount right now on first orders and they sell overstock where deals can be had.

I was searching for tile for hours for a work project on Friday! Hopefully my time spent will be helpful to you.

This website has list of tile companies and their websites-it was working on Friday but appears to be down right now...

In the meantime, try this one - not sure how pricey they are!

Jim, check out this tile from BananAppeal/Westminster Ceramics. It's called "Cross & Shield", and I recently saw it in a special order display at Lowes. I don't remember the exact price, but it wasn't anything insane... maybe $12/SF.

The Westminster website is lousy, but this tile definitely comes in a few color combinations (black, white, gray, blue). It's very bold and graphic, and I think it would look great as a backsplash.

You know what you COULD do? Go to one of those "paint your own ceramics" places with the picture of the tiles you like and ask for advice. You could either buy cheap white tiles and paint them to match the sample (or do your own variation), or you could find someone at the ceramics place to replicate them for you for a fee lower than the expensive tile price. (They probably won't be exactly the same, but this way what you get is custom, so that's even better!)

(The paint is really glaze that gets fired into the tile, so it's permanent, just to clarify.)

Just my personal opinion, but that looks like the really ugly linoleum tile we ripped off of layer 3 of our floors...

I think that tile is going to look really really dated very soon. You might want to bring in that type of pattern in a less permanent expensive way, such as fabric or wallpaper.

Jim, You could check out the tiles at ModCraft. They have a much less expensive tile collection for the modern minded. The tiles are stoneware and come in a great bunch of colors. These tiles are like nothing else out there. an option
