Hello AT,
Help! Our bedroom is overflowing with clothes! We have a very small and jam-packed closet and an ugly particle board wardrobe we pulled off the street several years ago.
We're ready to splurge on a nice-looking storage solution to replace the wardrobe. I want to take advantage of our high ceilings and I noticed "Robert's Golden Handcuffs" from your Smallest Apartment contest appeared to use Ikea kitchen cabinets as storage space in his bedroom.
This looks pretty damn good to me. Do you have any other suggestions in terms of floor to ceiling storage solutions - particularly storage space that has either drawers or doors (so our underwear isn't always on display)?
Thanks in advance! Jenny
Dear Jenny, First de-clutter! No matter what awesome solution you find, it sounds like you have a lot of energy tied up in your stuff. Pruning your collection will give you back a heap of energy and get the ball rolling.
Robert's solution has the advantage of being built in, which makes it really clean and maximizes the space, but you want to go pretty much floor to ceiling with it.
We would say if you are willing to do this, go to Ikea, look for a style of cabinet you like and go for it. This is your best bet.
Ikea has alot of different styles with enough modularity to allow you to add or subtract what you want. Just make sure you build them in by attaching them to your wall and trimming up the edges. Good luck, MGR
I agreee... The Ikea kitchen cabinets are some of the most versatile things around. I used them to build a side board, and am also contemplating using them for built-ins in the bedroom.
I'm starting my new kitchen, putting in Ikea cabinets, based on a great review in Consumer Reports. I hired Traemand dot com to come in to do measurements and draw up a plan. (I let you know how working with them is after they come.) They will plan both the kitchen and the storage area for the same $175 fee. I hear Ikea will refund some portion of this fee when you buy cabinets through them.
Ikea also has huge wardrobe/closet things, with sliding barn-style doors, with either frosted or wood doors. They can be fitted with various interior components (shelves/drawers/shoe racks) and they look like a wall of built-in closets when complete.
They are pretty tall, but I'm guessing you could augment, height-wise, even further by wallmounting kitchen cabinets above.
They are in the stores but I could not find them in a quick search of the Ikea site.
Several of the upscale closet fitters, like Poliform, could also offer alternatives.
I just want to mention what I did for a closet in my loft which has no walls or closets, and I think could be done in any room. I took Ikea bookcases side by side and faced them towards a wall, and then have elfa hanging racks mounted on that wall. So I use the racks and the bookcases as a walk-in closet. It's a hallway with my clothes folded on the shelves as well as hanging on the opposite racks. I don't know if this is space saving, but I don't like the clunky wardrobes, and this created a small area for all my clothes, and they don't open out into the bedroom.
It doesn't look like you have much room at all, but I thought I'd put it out there just in case it inspires another solution.
I found the ikea link that Patrick is talking about - I'm about to get the wardrobe for my room... http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10101&storeId=12&categoryId=10375&langId=-1&parentCats=10120*10366*10375&cattype=sub
I did something like sara a.,
but in a completely different space.
The big Ikea Varde storage units work really well for underwear and other small bits in a hallway/storage setup, and you can hang racks under hung kitchen cabinets for clothes on hangers.

that 'kea Pax Hakadal door setup looks pretty handy . . . . the major flaw of my closet is open hangers space
(and I don't want to put up a 'i'm in college" curtain')
Thanks, Megan!
I am considering IKEA Cabinet for the kitchen, and would like to know if anyone who has used these cabinets have any problems with them. Such as bowing of the shelves under weight or damage to the drawers due to standard use.
I'm actually in the process of installing ikea cabinets now cause I've heard some decent things. I'm using a manual I got online though to make the process easier. So far, so good.
Anyone else have any luck with this?
