Good Questions: Spanna Thumbs Up? Or Down?

7-27-spanna.jpgHiya AT,

I have a two-part question: I love the simplicity and the flexibility of the Spanna fold-out table at DWR and was thinking about getting it for my very small place. But before I do, anyone care to weigh on their experiences with this table? And, do you have suggestions for other fold out, nicely designed tables I should look at? HELP! I haven't really come across a really stylishly designed, yet functional table other than this one...

Thanks, Sue

I was also considering the Spanna table at one point for the same reasons as you - it is attractive and compact when not folded out, great for a smaller dining area. However, when I checked it out at DWR it just seemed a bit cheap, quality-wise. I've held onto my own too-large table in the meantime until I find something else that fits the bill.

I just bought a table just like this from Bo Concept which has extending leaves on each side and four chairs. (www.boconept.com) The construction looks and feels very sturdy and it definitely meets the style requirements. They have several models available and the options for wood color and legs can be customed. I went with the Occa 1800.

I would check out:

Calligaris tables
A great selection at AKO in Brooklyn

Dania makes a nice knock-off of the Ligne Roset coffee table/dinning table that goes up and down and opens out

And Calligaris makes one like that too - on the AKO website.

Lori 2 is on the money about Calligaris. I bought a Calligaris version of the Spanna table and have been very happy with it. There are other places in the NYC area besides AKO that sell Calligaris products. In fact, I bought my table from a very well-priced store in Soho on Broadway -- after finding a list of US-based distributors on the Calligaris website:

I've had the Spanna table for 2 years now, and it's ok. It is sturdy as long as you don't drag it along the floor to move it (it should be lifted). I wish I haden't bought it because I want to build a banquet in my kitchen, and the legs will be in the way. Also, food gets stuck in the crack between the glass and the wood. I do like the darkly finished wood, and the glass is a nice color. Overall, it's good, but not perfect.

We love ours - I would add that the height is just a wee tiny bit high for our 1930-era room, in that the windowsills aren't much higher than the table top. Keep this in mind when choosing chairs for it, too - esp. if you are on the shorter side

That said the table is just luminous and serviceable and makes us very happy.

I bought this table about 2 years ago and LOVE it (got it with the matching kyoto chairs (http://www.dwr.com/productdetail.cfm?id=0016) which are very reasonably priced and extremely sturdy). Looks good and is pretty easy to take care of--I wipe the wood down every few weeks with murphy's oil soap solution and use Windex on the glass as needed.

I bought this for similar reasons as you state but the bonus now is that I'm moving to a new place with a true dining space and will be able to keep it open in the expanded position.

The only down side as far as I can see is that when you extend it you do need to e a little careful as the rollers sometimes get a little caught in the track if you don't extend it slowly. But hey, how often are you gonna be doing this?

I've had a Spanna for a couple of years now and have been very happy with it. It's well-built and quite attractive (in the darker finish).

The only downside is that the legs aren't in an ideal position for seating people when it is fully extended -- but I think that will be a problem for any extendable table. And, as mentioned above crumbs and such will tend to get into the crack between the glass and wood, but it is easy to clean out.

Also, Conran has (had?) a nice extendable (well, more fold-out-able) table in an oak finish (with aluminum-looking legs) the last time I looked -- but it was about twice the price of the Spanna.

I purchased my Spanna table with two Kyoto chairs (for around $900) from the Adams Morgan Showroom of Design Within Reach (www.dwr.com).

Initially, I had a problem as the expansion would not open easily because the wheels would get stuck in the track. I called DWR and their customer service was outstanding! In about a week or so the delivery people came to my home and swaped out everything.

I bought the light colored wood and the Kyoto chairs are a great match. I love my set. The new table is a cinch to open and looks beautiful.

I give the table a thumbs up. I also can't say enough about DWR. I would not hesitate to recommend them, and I do plan to give them my business again. They have many chic and funky pieces -check it out at www.dwr.com

This posting is a bit dated, but I thought I would revive it with my experiences with the Spanna extension table. I bought this on sale at DWR which happens rarely so for the price you really can't beat it. I wasn't to keen on the glass table top so we opted for the all wood version which is slightly more expensive (i think). Matching chairs as the reviewer above me noted are also an excellent value and quality for the price. I give the chairs a thumbs up, the table, a thumbs sidedways. The finish on the table is a very sleek, matte finish. Its really beautiful, almost too beautiful! Go into a showroom and check it out if you are getting the all wood version. It scratches VERY easily. Moving a plate or glass across the surface is a no-no. So now, I must resort to a tablecloth or place mats which hides my beautiful new table. :(

I find that a cleaning with Murphys Oil will cover some of the fine scratches, but am now looking for an alternative that may be able to help a little better if possible.

I havent had any other problems with this table, including the rollers for the extension, although the showroom table did get stuck and needed three people to extend it! So I guess YMMV on that one.

Other than the scratching issue, I am very happy with this table and chair set.
