Good Questions: Stainless Steel Ooze?

2005_1_3_question mark.jpgHello AT,

i recently purchased a coop in lefferts gardens ... with stainless steel appliances. but, between the time [the previous owner] bought them and the time they became mine, something happened that left the stainless surfaces looking like there is ooze all over them.

they are dry to the touch, not sticky at all. conventional cleaning products seem to do nothing... any ideas? can stainless steel be waxed and buffed like a car? would that even help? i am totally clueless. thanks! A.

Hmmm. Stainless is famous for resisting stains, etc. Without knowing exactly what this looks like, we would recommend using a stainless steel cleaner and/or polisher, which does deal with the different qualities of this surface. Here are a few we found:

I am a believer in Barkeeper's Friend. And I now want to change my name to Dracket Twinkle.

Method Home makes a stainless cleaner that is eco-friendly and smells great. Not to mention the bottle is pretty. (though it won't make you giggle like "dracket twinkle") I'm not sure how it will do on unidentified ooze, but it works great on normal smudges and smears.

This is unrelated to stainless steel, but can someone recommend a handyman or company that takes apart sofas and puts them back together to get them into a small apartment? I have heard that such services exist in New York.

Before buying a cleaner, try to simple and green stand-by - baking soda, vinegar, and a scrubbie. This works wonders on my stainless steel sink.

To really clean stainless steel try ZUD Stainless cleaner available in a powder or softscrublike cleanser available at most hardware and supermarkets. If it won't work then nothing will. Try and rub in the direction of the grain like with wood work. Yes stainless does have a grain, the direction it was polished at the factory. If you rub against the grain you will really notice it. for areas that do not come in contact with food or people- try wiping with W-D 40. It will give a slightly oily film that makes SS look great and offers some protection. Mineral oil would also work.-One last note: never never ever use steel wool on SS- it will mess it up.

At a Walmart in Florida I was able to purchase a cleaner/polisher for my stainless steel sink - I believe it was made by Weisman or a name similar to that. It was in a aresol can and it worked wonders on my old sink. I am not able to find it up north. Any suggestions?
