Good Questions: Stylish Desk for $300

(Note: Include a pic of your problem and your question gets posted first.)

levenger_desk.jpgHello AT,

I'm looking for a small, stylish, preferably dark wood computer desk.
I don't want the modern beech & steel look of IKEA's workstations -- I'd like something warm, with a few storage drawers (preferably one file drawer). I have an iMac, so no need for CPU storage, but I would like a keyboard tray.

I've attached two examples of desks I really like (top- Levenger ,bottom- Hold Everything), but are out of my price range (they're around $600, I'm aiming for less than $300). I'd also do a small computer table with an accompanying storage unit.

holdeverything_desk.jpgTarget is the closest I've come, but I holding out hope that there is resource I haven't considered. (Resources I have considered: CB2, Crate & Barrel, DWR, Levenger, etc.) Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks so much!
Marti

P.S. I live in Chicago -- so, unfortunately, NYC-specific suggestions won't help

Dear Marti, Yours is tough question because you want so much and your price point is so low AND you've already ruled out IKEA. The best we could come up with was this West Elm work table with storage for $500, otherwise, you should troll Craigslist each day until you find your perfect mate. MGR

I know you already said no to ikea, but check out the Gustav line that comes in black/brown and oak (and also the requisite birch). The desk itself is $299 but maybe you could get the add-on drawer unit later?

I bought a table from. www.versatables.com

They have ultra high quality stuff that is made in America, there are alot of different choices. Good luck in your search.

The cheapo solution.
1) Buy a filing cabinet faced in melamine or something else you can paint.
2) Put a slab of wood or a hollow-core door on top.
3) Attach a keyboard shelf (available at computer stores and large stationery places).
4) Paint it whatever color pleases you.

PS:
I have the same Target desk. It's fine, but I miss the filing space. I haven't done anything new yet because I'm trying to figure out how to outfit myself to live without a desk.

I ordered a desk from Staples website (1+years ago). Love it...black w/ dark wood (faux) top...but doesn't look cheap or fake. Mult-tiered, lots of storage, computer tucks away. Not sure the brand...perhaps was West Elm.
Came in a million pieces to be assembled.

This desk from overstock could fit the bill.

i was in staples yesterday and was kind of surprised- they have nicer stuff than i would have imagined and for not to much money. They even had a work armoire for about $300. I'm partial to using an antique table with a nice shiny powerbook on it but if you need the ergonomics try staples.

I've been searching the entire city for desks smaller than 43 inches. I was in Crate and Barrel yesterday. They have several new desks, some wood (none with file drawers). The Larson now comes in black - its under $300 but not v. modern looking. There is a desk in the front of the store that does have a filing system -- it was 48 inches so I nixed it - not sure how much it costs.

M--
Did you try Hold Everything and/or West Elm?
You looking more modern or traditional?

Here's a nice desk that I was going to buy: http://www.cb2.com/family.aspx?c=116&f=1084
at $349 it's almost in your range. Shipping takes you over, though. I say almost, because actually I found a way to have something better made for about half the price. Email me if you want details.

Stacksandstacks.com has a lot of desk options for less than $300.

I have a great desk I'm selling actually which might work. ha! but if you want something new check out the Container Store. They have a desk system where a basic one (with filing cabinet and a drawer) costs about $250.
