Good Questions: Stylish Futon Cover Tips?

2-13-futoncover.jpgHello AT,

It seems that futon covers are made for the homes of Russian mobsters in Brighton Beach, i.e., as ugly and expensive as a Cosby sweater. Any ideas for where I might find an attractive futon cover for $100 or less? I am not interested in just solid twill, which looks too "dorm room" to me. I am hoping to find something with texture that makes my futon look like as much like a stylish and professional couch (this is for seeing therapy patients) as a futon possibly can...

I am attaching a pic of the room it's going in, which I am doing in a kind of West-Elmy organic twigs-and-faux bois kind of look. (P.S. I got the idea for framing paint chip strips from AT!)

Thanks! Jack

Anyone??

try some of the bedspread covers from Urban Outfitters, you could get two and sew them together (or get someone to sew them together). i guess you could get any kind of thick sheet or fabric and do the same. the trick is getting something thick enough that you can't see through to the futon fabric. the thing is that futon-covers are so easy to make because it's basically a big rectangle (no arms, cushions, etc.) so you should be able to get one made with any fabric you like.
for an organic twig & berries look, you could get an organic cotton or hemp cover.

Come on. They make all sorts of futon coverings. Sit down with the swatches. There is every kind of fabric/pattern option.

Try Tonic Living for retro futon covers for around $70.00. They also sell fabric and pillows.

Link is in my name

Try the site www.stretchandcover.com

Pretty cool slipcovers. I'm about to purchase myself for my sofa/loveseat.

Enjoy.

Tonic Living looks great. I'd check them out first.

I have a nice microsuede cover that I bought with my futon. It seems like most futon shops have them, but if you can't find one, I'm sure you could get one made in the right size by anyone who makes slipcovers.

Wow...did you not try googling for "futon covers" at all? That's what I did when I needed a new cover and I had no problems whatsoever finding a large selection covers.

That Tonic Living is great and I like what they've got to offer and the price is right--thanks elevenhounds!

(yes, of course I googled "futon covers"--the vast majority of what comes up looks like a cosby sweater; or, if it's decent looking, it sells for over $100)

Its not a professional print, but its not sloppy, but as angelune, suggested I use the bed spread covers from UrbanOutfitters. I just tuck them around, and they have enough length so they don't come out even when switching the futon from couch to bed.

You might try www.innovationny.com.

Hmm, if you want it to look more professional and couch-like I actually think the solid twill covers in a dark neutral (brown, black or navy) will be your best choice, then you can add pillows to provide the West Elm feeling.

If you're going to have therapy patients sitting on it, you'll want it to look less sloppy and bedlike and more tailored. (And a lighter colored fabric could show wear if many people are sitting on it.) Using a neutral color to make it essentially disappear is probably your best bet.

Hi. I'm not sure if you're still looking for a cover. I purchased mine here: http://www.futonsnow.com as I bought one of those target covers to start out and it just looked horrible on the futon. All baggy and loose.

When I was shopping sites this one talked about the fact not all futon mattresses are the same size and they offered 'lofts?' which they make the cover tailored to fit the size and thickness of your mattress for a better snug fit. We've been really happy with ours.

Best of luck to you in your search.

The problem with Tonic Living is their futon covers have a neutral twill on one side that is not intended for display and (as most futon aficionados know) futons need to be flipped regularly throughout their lifetimes to maintain their shape and comfort.

I'd recommend www.thefutonshop.com... They seem to have a really good selection of covers and they provide organic options.
