Hello AT,
My husband is desperate for a reclining chair. I think most recliners are puffy and remind me of frat houses. Tal especially likes the Flight Recliner from DWR (pictured) and it has passed the sit test, but it's $2K covered with fabric!
Any hints on where to find a recliner with style that won't break the bank? Any readers who remember the pics of our apartment from the I've got Color Contest (Candace and Tal's whimsical nest) may be able to target a chair fit for our space.
Many thanks, Candace

Candace, have you seen Todd Oldham for La-z-boy? He's got some mod-ish recliners in a variety of fabrics.

I also thought that Mitchell Gold was making recliners for Restoration Hardware, but I don't see any on MG's web site right now...
sorry, make that "recliner"--looks like Todd Oldham designed only one recliner for La-z-boy...
What about the Todd Oldham recliners?

Here is a leather one from Restoration Hardware that isn't bad.
They have some nice (and comfortable) recliners at Room and Board...

if you had it upholstered in fabric rather than leather it might bring the price down
barcalounger has recliners that don't look like barcaloungers. seriously.

I saw this one in Cost Plus World Market the other day. It was pretty nice:

Or keep an eye on Craigslist for a vintage Danish recliner and have it reupholstered to fit your place.

Candace-
I too was in a similar search and ended up deciding on an Eames Lounge Chair - http://dwr.com/productdetail.cfm?id=9100 - not a recliner, but worth considering.
Here's another one by Lazy Boy (not Todd Oldham)

I've got this one...I bought it with my generous employee discount when I was a holiday employee at Restoration Hardware. It's the only way I would allow a recliner in the house.

Actually there are four recliners by Todd Oldham for La-z-boy. Several of them look very similar.
I think there are two on the floor of the Todd Oldham La-z-boy store in Soho.

I like the Paris club chair recliners (several manufacturers offer something similar.)
When it's up, it's a club chair. It doesn't look like a recliner at all.
Cassina makes a nice swivel recliner that is not too bulky called the Dodo. All the La-Z-Boy models are so bulky, not really modern or contemporary at all.
Cassina's website is www.cassinausa.com
Thank you all so much for your advice! Your suggestions are great.
Lesley- I love the idea of locating a danish lounge online and re-upholstering. Would you happen to have a designer in mind who made recliners?
I have looked into the Todd Oldham chairs at La-z-boy online, and will have to take a look in person to check the puffiness factor. The fabric choices look kinda funky and cool.
Kristen- I am definitely digging the Metro recliner from Restoration.
John- I luurve the Eames Lounge, wish it was in the budget....
Barcalounger gone modern, who'da thunk it?!
best,
Candace
Check out this cool green recliner 5 pictures down at this url. http://www.cityissue.com/id21.html
It is from my favorite store here in Atlanta - they ship i think.
Best,

the zero gravity recliner mentioned on apartment therapy.
inclination recliners offer a more comfortable fit than the standard 3 position recliners most often found.

Yeah, my husband and I bought a Barcalounger Kingston II a couple months back from Storehouse (sigh, I know, lousy chain store!), and we think it's both good quality and pretty mod. The price was also much less than DWR....I think just a tad over a thousand bucks. It's comfy and doesn't seem grandpa-ish.
I got a Radius Recliner from Ethan Allen about a year ago and love it. It was under $2000 covered in grade 5 leather, so it's certainly more affordable than the Flight Recliner.

i love the fjords by Hjellegjerde zero gravity recliner seen here:
http://www.purecontemporary.com/ProductGuide/product/1005922
The Flight Recliner still looks cooler but I really have to roll my eyes at DWR's description. After looking at all the other contenders mentioned in the comments, it's obvious that the Flight Recliner's design isn't innovative and really didn't require the EXPERTISE of an airplane seat designer.
The Fjords recliners fit ny room the best. Check here: www.backreliefunlimited.com
Candace, hi.
i'm in clinton hill & struggling with the same problem. i LOVE the DWR recliner & have frequently looked at the site with yearning - but, too much $. have you found something similar in design but less expensive since?

the bo concept wing chair is pretty cool and starts at $1200. It's not a full recliner (since there isn't a footrest) but you can get an ottaman to complete the look. and it's pretty comfortable.
