Good Questions: Sweater Storage?

2005_1_3_question mark.jpgHello AT,

Anyone have any great ideas on how to stack/store sweaters? Every winter my closet is a mess, pulling them in and out of the boxes I have them stacked in.

Thanks, JST

Dear JST, we know your pain. We are terrible at folding our sweaters and get yelled at every now and then. We are working on it.

The big secret? Simply being careful, keeping them neat and folding them correctly. There is no replacement for skill in this area.

  • How to fold a shirt properly

We wouldn't use boxes. Of course, there are storage devices for keeping sweaters properly stacked, and these can help. So, too, can installing lights in your closet so you can see what you are and are not doing. (Thanks, JST!) MGR

I no longer live in an apartment but when I did I used to make throw pillow sized cases and fold up my sweaters, stick them inside and just use them as accessories on the couch.

    Karan--
That is hysterical! (in a good way)

I used to be REALLY bad about folding sweaters and T-shirts, but two things changed-- I got the cubicle Rolly unit from The Terence Conran Shop, AND I have what is actually a cutting board perfectly sized for use as a folding form (a la Gap). The cubicles of Rolly prevent too-high a tower of sweaters, and the folded sweaters are the perfect size for each compartment. I was NEVER a fan of open storage before, but this actually works for me. The added bonus-- it makes packing for trips easier than ever.

Ah, the folding form! (mentioned by patrick, the other one)...Takes me back to my retail days at Laura Ashley. We used catalogues back then (a regular-sized magazine will do too). It really does work well, although I must confess, I can't bear to use one now. I just fold up the really bulky stuff (rather haphazardly), and then hang up the rest.

Well...(if you have the closet space and you're looking for cheap)you could buy those hanging cubbies from Ikea. I have the grey sweater one and they fit all of my sweaters and all of my favorite sweatshirts, taking up about a foot-wide of space total since it hangs down (rather than boxes stacked everywhere and having to move them around all the time). About 3-4 winter sweaters (those thick ones) fit in one cubby when folded.

I also bought one to use for my my towels and washclothes because my apartment has no closets for linens. I hung it in my small standing wardrobe and it's easily accessible to company who stay over and frees up all the under-the-sink space I desperately needed for bathroom and cleaning supplies.

I hope you find some kind of solution! Boxes are such a hassle!!!

    Vacuum bags.

Get the small kind with room for 2 or 3 sweaters maximum.

They really take the volume out of bulky sweaters, and they pack together decently.

I use rectangular-shaped zippered sweater bags from the Container Store; they fit about 8 sweaters each, and stack nicely on my closet shelf.

Fred, my vacuum bags never stay vacuumed. Extremely frustrating.
