Good Questions: The Perfect Stool for My Table?

2005_19_question-mark---red.jpg(Send a pic with your question and rise to the top of the qeue!)

2005_26_tablequestion2.jpgHello AT,

I posted a query sometime ago about trying to get some contemporary looking affordable seating stools for a small dining table i just finished building (this weekend). Thought I would send you a picture and see if you know of places i could turn to.

thanks much, d

Dear D, what a fun table! We would recommend either sticking with dark wood or try playing steel off against it. Here's some recommendations:

i actually bought a stool that looks exactly like the Frosta from ikea from Target last weekend. Target carries them in blond wood and espresso, which i bought to match a desk from Hold Everything. (and it matches perfectly) the seat on the Target one is thicker and you can't see any of the hardware. i paid $14.99 for it.

Sorry, me again. One more thing. I saw another stool at the store and loved it. slab style with two shelves cut into it. i dont know if i'd actually store anything on those if i used it as a stool. i guess i probably would if i used it as an endtable. it's $79.99. click my name to view.

Target has tons and tons of stools. Many are leftovers from Global Bazaar. Defniitely worth looking at.

Would you consider a brown leather cube? You could even do two different shades (eg 2 dark brown and 2 light brown cubes/ottomans) You can get these at lots of places -- Target has many online, and I know I've seen them at C&B, PBarn et al. Great Table!

What's the reason you're considering stools versus chairs with backs?

This project took me 7-8 months to finish. I had originally started off with the idea of Japanese style stool I had seen somwhere. Very similar to your Shinto stool, but had a more robust and a low key feel to it. Cant remember where. I really liked the subtle slopes and lines. I think it was in a furniture store in Cambridge, MA. It was too expensive :-( From some wood shop in Vermont.

So then I kind of just started making a note of things I saw here and there. I loved some stuff I saw at Brent Comber's (sp?) site. But the prices knocked me over.

The round Target stool I thought was cool. I saw it in a LI, NY Target when I was there couple of weeks ago. However the global bazzar section from my local boston neighborhood Target seems to have disappeared. I checked last weekend and could not find it. Unless they have relocated the section or something.

Yes brown ottomans are definitely an option I am open to. Need to find one with right size and shape.

Chair versus stool. Some of my friends definitely want me to put chairs. Just that my dining area is a small one and I was thinking I can tuck the stools underneath when not in use. May be if I get the right chair I would change my mind. Couple of the IKEA chairs are interesting indeed. Cant wait for the Boston IKEA to open later this year!!!

Many thanks for the ideas and pointers. Always excited to follow leads. :-)

Another option to consider is a bench on one side. I like the idea of one uninterrupted horizontal against that table of planes. And use chairs at the table's other points.

A bench to consider:

Although also not Target-budget, I could see, to quote Monty Python, "something completely different"... DWR's cork stools...

I think something with shape/mass versus "line" will provide an effective option where that beaut of a table still stands in the (desreved) spotlight.

very nice indeed!!! I could try making something resembling the bench. But I would not mind buying the cork stools :)

Perhaps on the non-bench side, you could consider the odd-hybrid Jacobsen/Cherner chairs on Scavenger:

If the "bench side" of the table sits closest to an adjoining living area, an upholstered bench would help integrate the bench into the seating area, and make it more useful before/after dinner...

Some options...

or Garnet Hill's Slim Cushioned Bench

Both the benches are great. The living room is not an adjoining area. This dining area is a small room by itself. But I think I can use a bench like the Garnet Hill in the same room but along the long window facing out. Regarding the Jacobsen chairs, even though i know they are classic design, i dont feel so hot about them :(

If you get a chance to checkout 10essentials.com I really like their stool. May not the wood color in this particular case. But I like the design. Unfortunately I dont want to pay $450 for a piece.

I actually agree about those chairs, in spite of the recommendation. I did like the relative color of the wood, and the fact that they are so curvy in relation to you angular table.

10essentials...very cool.
