Good Questions: Traditional, Shaker Style Furniture?

2005_1_3_question mark.jpgHello AT,

I am looking for more rustic, traditional furniture and have been burned by Pottery Barn. Where can I find good American furniture, in the Shaker style or likewise?

Any clues appreciated. Thanks, Karen

Why not order Shaker furniture from the Shakers?

www.shakervillageky.org/

There aren't many Shakers left, and most of them are over 80, so these are actually made by other Kentuckians. They don't sell everything through the website, but I remember them making and selling chairs with that traditional webbing at Pleasant Hill as well. Maybe it's a shipping issue? Call and ask...

I love the stuff at Gothic Cabinet Craft (I go to the one on Smith Street in Brooklyn). You can get it finished or unfinished.

Good luck

Ian Ingerall in Cornwall, Connecticut, makes outstanding Shaker furniture, which the photos on his website just don't do justice. If you have a car, a ride to his shop at the base of the historic covered bridge over the Housatonic River in the beautiful Litchfield County is a great ride.

Don't laugh, but have you considered Ethan Allen? Certainly more pedestrian than the great leads above (Thos. Moser, Scott Jordan), and not as fun as the lovley ride to the covered bridge, but a possibility...

There's also Sturbridge Yankee Workshop... www.sturbridgeyankee.com

On a somewhat related note, have you looked at Stickley? (www.stickley.com)

They're known for Mission, but they have lots of high quality furniture. Similar prices to Ethan Allen, less than Restoration Hardware. They have a really nice Manhattan showroom that's worth a vist.

Take that Rupa. ;)

In or around Kansas City, I recommend Traditions Furniture (www.traditionsfurniture.com). Their stuff is top quality, Amish or Mennonite made, and they ship!
