Good Questions: Underbed Storage for Me?

7-26--bed.jpgHello AT,

I'm in a small room with limited space. I bought a Room & board platform bed to give myself underbed storage. I'm looking for attractive shelving units, baskets, or crates. I thought I had the solution with crate & barrel's kenton cubes, but they turned out to be cheap and flimsy. The bed is steel so I'ld like something softer.

Any ideas? Thanks, Greg

I have no help for Greg, but I just wanted to say thanks for the tip about the Kenton Cubes--I was just looking at them last night and bookmarked them, but now I'll look elsewhere.

May I ask where the sheets/duvet are from? That's a lovely print!

You might want to check the Container Store which has a variety of types of storage boxes.

canvas totes? http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&sku=107988
I have a few in black that work okay for storing smaller items under my bed- it's on risers, but I have a bedskirt because I HAD to use the space underneath for storage of a lot of things, most of which wouldn't fit in bins.
Did you paint the wall behind the bed? It's a fantastic color and if you did, I would love you forever for sharing who makes it(because the love of intarweb strangers is so important.)

A friend had the same problem and solved it by buying unpainted shelves, lying them on their backs and adding casters so they could easily be rolled out. She painted them black so they would disappear. You really could decorate them any way you wanted to and they weren't very expensive.

PB kids has a lot of inexpensive storage bins, some are quite good looking, I especially like the Canvas Buckets, very cooll looking:

Stacks and Stacks always has good storage solutions as does Lillian Vernon, believe it or not.

There's also the DEGERNES Bed storage box for $39.99 from Ikea.

Here's what I suggest - a custom-made wooden box with four sliding drawers (two on each side of the bed), stained in black or espresso to match the bed frame.

Then add cool metal drawer pulls that match the color and style of the bed frame.

You could make it yourself or else probably pay someone to make it.

If you don't feel like building stuff, you could steal the drawers from an old, used dresser or maybe buy some individual drawers from IKEA that will fit under the bed.

We have that same bed, but chose it planning on NOT storing anything under it. My advice woudl be to use long bedding (quilts et al) to hide whatever you choose to use for storage containers.

Great bed frame, BTW -- doesn't have the infamous "West Elm" issue discussed here a while back!

Greg - I think both The Container Store and Hold Everything have fabric-covered boxes for the softer look you mentioned.

Greg- I have no comment about the storage but congratulations on squeezing in a piano into your space.

The drawer ideas are great but it's my experience that dust and other tiny unwanted things can creep into open storage. I'd think people would want something that completely encloses.

seconding rachel's solution of bed risers + long bedskirt + whatever random containers you like = happiness. our bed is now so high we use three milk crates under each side of the bed as slide-out drawers for underbed storage GALORE: shoes, socks, workout clothes, handbags. . . anything fits in there.

I'm seconding Jackie's solution of the drawers.

I salvaged some drawers from an old, ornate dresser left on the sidewalk, put castors on the bottom (optional), repainted them, and added funky drawer pulls from Anthropologie.

If that's your style, it's a quirky little touch to an otherwise modern look -- and very cheap!

max, we're going to have to settle on a naming system here. Can't have a max and a Max.
