Good Questions: Upholstering a Mission-style Coffee Table?

5-13-mission-table.jpg

Hello Apartment Therapy — I picked up this mission-style table at a garage sale for $5. I'm in the process of cleaning it up and painting. It will probably end up a oatmeal-y beige or a dove grey. Here is my question: I love the look of ottoman coffee tables. I was thinking of upholstering the top of this one with some foam and fabric, but I am worried it will look odd with the mission-style sides. Anyone have suggestions? I can't find any photos of what this might look like. Thanks!

Here's an example of what it could look like:

I just googled "mission style fabric ottoman" so I'm sure there are better examples out there. Good luck!

I think it could look really good, if you put the time and effort needed into it. Good luck, and please, share the results with us! :)

The company Z-gallerie, makes a mission style coffee table whose upholstered features you may wish to incorporate into your project. On this table the upholstered top can be lifted off, exposing a finished top, allowing the table to be used as ottoman/seating. Like this table you may wish to create a separate upholstered top that fits snugly on top of the existing table allowing the same. Before you do this make sure your table can take the stress of people sitting on it.

It's already much high for an ottoman, so adding foam, etc on top would make it look rather stupid.

It might look nice with brass brads or nail heads going around the outside. If you do think it might be too high for an ottoman never fear - you can always take a few inches off the legs.

I think that one of the things that makes an ottoman coffee table all the rage is that you get to use those larger-than-life trays. In your case, I think you should make the cushion removable, since you're already starting with a table... That way, if you ever need to use it as a coffee table you can do so, and when you want to put your feet up on something cushy, you can do that too.

Good luck!

I have often thought about this too, as these mission style tables seem to be everywhere lately for cheap. Please post pictures when you are done! I can't wait to see it.

when you get the saw out to shorten the legs, you could just cut those slats out. or you could cover the sides with wood, plexiglass, mirror or fabric. or weave ribbon, yarn, fabric strips, metal strips or leather strips into the slats.

No and no, a thousand times no! You can get an upholstered ottoman (in real fake plastic leather) for about $79 at Target or Walmart. Use the table as is because if you saw the legs or the slats it's bound to ruin the table's proportions and you may end up just throwing it away when the upholstery thing doesn't work out.

I bought my black double ottoman at Target and keep it covered with a beautiful chocolate brown throw, with a large wood tray on top so that if anything spills I just throw it (is that why they're called throws?) into the washer and voila it's clean again.

Target also had single ottomans in a variety of upholstery styles and colors for about $39 each and at that price you could buy two of them and push them together. The really great thing about these is the extra storage space under the hinged top with enough room for a pillow, sheet and blanket for when a guest spends the night or for a collection of board games, or whatever.

Motherbear, I am going to have to disagree that messing with this particular table would ruin its proportions.

maybe a removable cushion like this would be good?

Sorry about the photo quality. We're renovating and this is the only place that is clean with enough light. :) (On our new tile!)
