Hello AT,
I've been living in Queens for a year with hundreds of books in boxes and no bookshelves. I've heard there's someplace in Manhattan that sells used industrial shelving, but I can't find it in the yellow pages or online. Do you have any suggestions?
(Industrial shelving is the open metal shelving used in warehouses. I tried calling a national distributor that sells it new, but their first question was whether I have a truck duck. Uh, no.) Thanks very much!
Best, Cate

Believe it or not, they have these are Costco. Nicer than what's pictured.
They may have them online too. Not sure but I think you can order from them online even if you're not a member (maybe pay a bit more)
also at both target and home depot. i had them in my old loft and spent less then 25 bucks per unit.... u probably don't need to buy them used.... i think kmart sells them too
Two Jakes in Brooklyn (www.twojakes.com) might have some, even if not listed on their web site.
You're probably thinking of:
B & Z Steel Equipment Company
(212) 966-5855
78 Greene St
New York, NY 10012
Good luck!
Or you could go the catalog route.... C&H Distributors is a great source for all things industrial: shelves, workstations, etc. Lots to choose from .
www.chdist.com
craigslist could be your new best friend
(but then you'd probably have to get a Zipcar account to get them home)
anyway, I outfitted a friend's non-profit with exactly these same shelves off the FREE listing on Craigs. They come in a pretty wide variety of quality, and we lucked out with some good ones. When they are bent and missing the cross and side braces, they are not worth hauling away. . .
I'd be surprised if Office Depot and those kinds of store didn't sell them...but I'd salvage first because they are such a common item.
Costco is the spot. A set with WHEELs is about 70 bucks. These can't be distinguished from the Hold Everything / Williams Sonoma ones.
