Hello AT,
I am renovating my bathroom, and I just can't find a vanity base that I like. I already purchased a travertine vessel sink and a faucet and I would like to have a wallmount vanity custom made. What I have in mind is something like the Kohler Purist line wallmount vanity bases. Can you recommend a good source or a carpenter in the NYC area by any chance? The Kohler ones go for $1400 just for the base and my target price is more like 1/10 of that :)
Thanks, Melis

Melis,
How high up from the floor does your plumbing come in? I ask because, as I mentioned in my good question response earlier today, I have run into a problem with the wall-mounted cabinet that I was going to use (it's too short for our plumbing) and may now be stuck with it, thank you very much Leesam Kitchen & Bath. Anyways, I think we will now find a vanity with legs and need to find a buyer for the cabinet.
The cabinet I have looks a lot like the Kohler Purist line in the dark finish, and is 24" w x 18" h (have to check the depth at home tonight). It doesn't have a drawer, though--has a cabinet door that opens, with a brushed nickel handle. I think it would work with a vessel sink. Let me know if this sounds interesting to you, and I can send you a picture tonight.
Melis,
I have the Kohler vanity you are referring to in black walnut. I'm not in the NYC area but my contractor, like most contractors, gets huge discounts from the local bath superstore to maintain loyalty and plenty of business. He in turn passed on this discount to us (most contractors will pass on some portion of the discount to the customer) and we ended up paying $800 for it. Still pricey I know, but almost half it's retail price.
No way a carpenter would do it for $140. Custom made furniture is more expensive than machine made furniture. Try ebay.
Yes, I was trying to follow the same logic. The mass produced item is too expensive, so you think you'll have a custom made piece instead, which will cost you... twice as much?
Also, you don't need a "capenter", for this, as you request. You need a cabinet maker. Not the same.
Best of luck.
I have that Koehler vanity and I'm in the process of having it installed. I echo Reef-never pay retail! If you can't find a local contact to help, we ordered all our Koehler fixtures for two new bathrooms from Employee Wholesale Direct www.ewdir.com. They were cheap and service was great.
Anita, I'd be interested in that Leesam cabinet, as I have a 30" wide powder room that needs a small wall-hung vanity. Send me an e-mail...
